The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Succession - Quentin Tarantino bloodbath style
Wasn't sure about this series as I'm not really a fan of blood and gore but the reviews were so good I had to check it out. Each episode just got better and better. The writing is top notch (a bit heavy on the use of the f word but get past that if you can). The script connecting each of Roderick's heirs to an Edgar Allan Poe story is genius. The acting is spot on and there is never a dull moment. Prepare to be shocked, horrified and surprised. The last couple of episodes tie everything in together and all I can say is that it is brilliant. Would like to give this series a 10+ rating. Perfect watching for Halloween week.
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Emotional and heartbreaking saga of Whitney's rise to fame and tragic end
Don't understand why there weren't better reviews for this biopic of one of the most amazing voices of her generation. I found the movie difficult to watch at times knowing the outcome ... Whitney wasn't surrounded by the right people and could have been saved if only she had listened to the ones who really loved her. Naomi Ackie does an incredible job of portraying Whitney and I forgot at times that I wasn't looking at the real Whitney. The supporting cast is excellent especially Tamara Tunis as her mother Cissy. Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown is as despicable as you could imagine. I did not know of her relationship with Robyn Crawford and now wonder if they had been allowed to be together as a couple would Whitney's life had been happier.
Daisy Jones & The Six: Track 7: She's Gone (2023)
Loved this episode!
I wasn't sure where this episode was going but it really gets into the characters' pasts and motives. A bit of trivia about the Greek island of Hydra ... it's the same island where Leonard Cohen bought a house in 1960 for $1500 ! He inherited the money from his grandmother and used to retreat there to write. It was his happy place and he returned often over the years. Not sure if this was written into the story for that connection, but I definitely would like to visit it one day now.
We saw a very different and happier side of Daisy. Simone shines as well in this episode and of course the whole LGBTQ scene is explored.
Travelers: Jenny (2017)
Covid-19 predicted!
There have been other programs that have imagined worldwide pandemics. The medical field had been predicting it for years and so yes, the writers of this show are amazing and as I watch this in March 2023 (for the first time!) it is definitely incredible to think we've now been through this. We've now lived with Covid for 3 years and those of us who have stayed healthy, through our immunity or vaccines or both, are lucky to be able to reflect on this huge global event. Officially almost 7 million people have died from this virus (an underestimated number by all accounts). The sad part is that there are still people out there who don't believe it. I love this series by the way and really love that it's Canadian! Top notch all the way!
Three Pines (2022)
Louise Penny's series is well represented
Just starting to watch Three Pines. If you are a fan of Louise Penny's series you will love it! The story includes the Indigenous story of missing women, so very timely for Canada. The setting in the Eastern Townships at Christmas time is beautiful. I've spent a lot of time in that area so I know very it well. I have read every Inspector Gamache book by Louise Penny so I may be a little partial but I think anyone would love this series. I am pleased that many of the actors in this series are Canadian. Tattoo Cardinal especially is an icon in Canada. Donald Sutherland's son Rosisif plays a major role.
Geostorm (2017)
An enjoyable science fiction movie that isn't far off what is happening to our planet at this moment
When I read the synopsis for this movie I couldn't help but think that some of the scenarios are quite close to what is happening right now - extreme weather conditions causing drought, flooding, torrential rains - all due to global warming. The special effects are not the best I've seen but pretty good. The supporting cast is quite impressive too. If you like this type of movie - it's pretty good.
