Future Man (2017)
Watch this show
I saw this pop up on Amazon as a recommended watch and I'd never heard of it before and as it was time travel (Which I love) I thought I'd give it a go.
I managed to get through season 1 in just two days because I really enjoyed the story, loved the comedy, loved the characters and wanted more. I have to give massive kudos to Seth Rogen for taking a chance here. This series is just a delight because it has fun with it's concept and yet it treats the story seriously, actions have consequences, there is consistency and each character gets some development.
More shows could do with showing the level of care that Seth has given to futureman. I want even more!!
Centurion (2010)
Watch this movie for Olga Kurylenko
I've seen this a couple of times and while it's not a bad little movie set during the Roman invasion of Britain the acting of both Micheal Fassbender and especially Olga Kurylenko elevate it to be better than the script allows it to be.
The film itself is based on a real event that happened around the time the Romans were withdrawing from Britain to consolidate power back home and tells the story of the ninth legion which vanished. It's Fassbenders mission to locate them or the eagle.
Kurylenko plays Etain and doesn't say a single word throughout the whole movie, thanks to a brutal torture inflicted by the Romans, instead her facial expressions have to convey everything she is feeling and she handles the role with amazing skill that I never thought she had.
I give this 8/10, not for the storyline which is derivative and dull but simply for Fassbender and especially Kurylenko who shows what great acting is all about.
Highlander: The Source (2007)
Bad. Bad. Bad. Even for a fan movie this would be bad
I love Highlander, the original one is timeless and I'd love to see more in that universe. The TV series had a good stab at it (pardon the pun!), it had good and bad episodes. It had some good drama. It was at least on the right road.
Then there is this movie. Just what the hell is this movie supposed to be? It looks cheap. It looks cheaper than a lot of fan movies. The idea of finding the source, the very first immortal, what a great idea, we could have had flashbacks, we could have new immortals, a good adversary, basically the first movie all over again.
What did we get? Well, I'm still trying to work that out but whatever it is, it's bloody awful. It's even worse than Highlander 2 (yup, it's that bad).
This movie has METHOS in it, how can a movie with Methos be bad? Well, i think he just showed up for his paycheque. Can't say I blame him. The script is bad, the movie is bad, the action is laughable, the quality is desirable, the guardian is not an enemy but some pillock in bad makeup.
Can we just pretend that this doesn't exist?
Getting Gotti (1994)
If you like shouting in place of drama then you'll love this.
I know that Lorraine Bracco is supposed to be giving a "gutsy" performance in this but overall, all she does is stomp around the screen and shout at people. It's almost laughable at times.
I also got confused at the first part of the movie, Lorraine Bracco's character shows up for work on her first day in the DA's office and in the next scene two years have gone past.
The rest of the movie isn't actually that bad, It's not factual or anything but it is interesting to get a view in the mafia and legal worlds. It's a shame that Lorraine Bracco ruins the movie with her awful performance.
The Lego Movie (2014)
Surprisingly well done with some decent humour and twists
I wasn't expecting much out of this movie, after all, it is just about lego mini figures, how good could it be?
Surprisingly, it was pretty damn good. The jokes were clever and they all fitted in to either contemporary culture or were related to lego, the storyline was pretty much as expected but still executed in a way that left me thoroughly enjoying it and the effects were better than some Hollywood blockbusters.
Overall, a totally enjoyable 90 minutes with enough in there for adults and children alike.
Now, where is my lego set????
Dredd (2012)
This is Dredd
I wasn't expecting much out this after Sylvester Stallone's atrocious outing but I thought I'd give it a go.
The start wasn't that impressive, just your typical gun and chase scene and Karl Urban as Dredd just looked a little emaciated for my impression of Dredd but the chin looked good and the uniforms were dirty and obviously things were pretty bad in mega-city. I was also impressed with the bikes which at least had a passing resemblance to those in the comic books so at least there is some effort.
And then we are introduced to Cassandra Anderson played perfectly by Olivia Thirby. Knowing the history of Dredd and Anderson this ended up being a nice introduction into how they met.
The main thrust of the story is that of a locked down mega block where it's just Anderson and Dredd going against the bad guys. It is your pretty formulaic computer game in a movie, you have the canon fodder then the end of level bosses but it is handled beautifully with amazing visuals and a wonderful sound track. This movie is for the Dredd fans. Karl Urban and Olivia Thirby play their roles perfectly. Anderson and Dredd are brought to life in this movie.
More please!!
Mindhunters (2004)
Watch it as a comedy and not a thriller, much better
This movie is about a bunch of FBI wannabe profilers who get dumped on an island and left to solve a simulated case when they start getting bumped off for real.
From the very first killing to the last these FBI wannabes are utterly clueless and incompetent. It's like watching Police Academy: The horror years or something.
Some of the methods for killing off the agents are more inventive than in saw and, of course, just as likely to totally fail because they are over engineered.
In fact, treating it as a comedy made for a better movie than treating it as a serious thriller.
Mind's Eye (2016)
Surprisingly clever
First of all, forget the official synopsis. This is not a sci-fi flick about the collapse of spacetime or anything like that. It's misleading and it's a shame, I think that is what has put some people off.
What it is though is a rather clever mind screw as the result of a car crash. Stick with it and it all starts to make sense, it was interesting to try to guess what was going on and I almost got it right. There are some very clever and emotionally charged plot changes. The acting is not that bad, especially when the get to the crunch of what is really going on
Think of it as similar to the butterfly effect, for a low budget movie this really was a clever storyline if a little too long before it got to the real emotional crunch point of the car crash itself.
