Apple & Onion (2016)
Hilarious yet wholesome
We live in a jaded time. It's nice to see a clever animated series that both adults and kids could enjoy, and doesn't have wise characters whose only comedic gimmick is to put others down. This series reminds me of classic shows like Rocky and Bullwinkle, or Lancelot Link. There is an innocence here that is refreshing.
Odd Squad: Odds and Ends (2019)
An Odd End.
I don't know if this is the last show of the series, but it is appropriately odd. It was weird, but didn't lay an egg. We finally learn Agent Otis' backstory, which was hinted at in his first appearance. It puts Otis in jeopardy, and sets the stage for a surrealistic battle for the fate of Odd Squad. He doesn't duck from his responsibility, and ultimately helps defeat a really odd villain.
America Says (2018)
Good Natured Family Fun
This show grows on you. The host has a nice dry sense of humor. The teams are likable. It favorably compares to Family Feud, which has become needlessly raunchy and somewhat disgusting in recent years. I like how the question is visible on the board, unlike on Feud. It helps my hard-of-hearing family member play along.
Good Bones (2016)
Enjoyable alternative to the tired flipping franchise
Good Bones follows a Mother-Daughter team that takes old or dilapidated homes in Indianapolis and fixes them up, thus helping revitalize a neighborhood. The two leads are very likable, and from what I've seen, the series doesn't contain a lot of forced and contrived drama and conflict that you see in such shows as Flip or Flop, or Love It or List It.
They pick a truly run-down house, so you don't have to go through that staged, silly routine from other shows of "are they going to pick that one, or the other one?" The houses that I have seen are truly a mess, making the renovation very remarkable. You are also spared the presence of spoiled homeowners haughtily proclaiming their need for an open-concept, mega kitchen "for entertaining", knowing full well they'll probably be ordering from Pizza Hut most of the time.
The team is very likable, especially the mother, Karen Laine, whose smile is infectious. They seem to have a good time doing the show and that matters.
