She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Had a Blast
Been a little tired of the typical MCU formula, this was an unexpected treat. It was charming and funny. As a comedy it lands and the action sequences are pretty fun too. Overall I don't get the hate for the show. The characters were relatable and charismatic. The plot points were solid, Sure it didn't quite fit into a drama category and leaned more into the comedy and absurdity of the situation, but without the plot following standard conventions were allowed to just breath in the world a bit which the MCU doesn't usually really allow the characters to do. It felt like a fantastically fun way to build on the world without crazy stakes and it was nice.
Happiest Season (2020)
You'll either love it or hate it.
There is some frustrating moments in the movie, but they feel authentic. It could have benefited from building on Harper and Abby's relationship more, but I'm willing to give it a pass on that because well no rom com does. Not really. Most negative reviews are people shipping Riley and Abby. While I can see the appeal. The natural chemistry of those actors was good, I think its refreshing to see a couple actually progress, move past their problems and move forward. If Abby had left she would have been justified without a doubt but working through it is at the characters core what she really wanted. It felt genuine and heartfelt. Also they were a cute couple. Minus Harper's awful behavior for the first 4 days. Leaving 10 to balance out the 1 stars from Riley X Abby shippers, probably a solid 7/10. 9/10 if we're just talking Christmas romcoms
The Addams Family (2019)
Don't listen to the negative reviews
This takes inspiration from the og comics and the old show. The art style is lifted from the comics, so if the live action movies are all you have seen it might seem jarring, it is executed well. The story is compelling and while some plot points might be predictable they are a genuine joy to watch unfold. Seriously give it a chance, but don't expect an adaptation like the more recent movies. It's an adaptation of the source material.
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009)
An Abomination to the Series.
If you are a fan of the Cirque du Freak series, skip this movie. It butchers every aspect of the story, to the extent of killing any possibility of it even remotely having a tie in to the ending of the book. They rush through the plot points in the book that they keep and butcher the characters in the process. They throw out a lot of major plot points that make the story less cohesive, and make it almost unrecognizable as being tied to the series. This series deserves a proper movie representation and this isn't it.
The Little Mermaid (2018)
DISNEY DID NOT INVENT THE LITTLE MERMAID!!!!
Alright now that the title is out of the way, this movie is a reimagining of the Hans Christian Andersen tale, the one Disney reimagined with their own version. The original story is public domain and anyone can make their own version of it (which is why disney was able to make their version, they did this with a lot of their renaissance pieces). I gave this movie a 7 for a few reasons. The lead actress who plays the mermaid is perfectly believable and whimsical, Elle is charming and sweet, the story is imaginative and compelling. The negatives of this movie can be positives when taken in the right light. The actor who plays the villian is laughably bad at executing his lines, the special effects seem to be pretty low budget. There is a hammy factor to the movie that can really be enjoyed if you go into it knowing the bad qualities first. The good parts are good enough to keep you watching and the bad parts are bad enough to be ironically good (imagine Tommy Wiseau delivery levels from the villian). The end is kind of rushed so you might have to re watch it to get the very end bit. That is due to the awkward pacing. Overall its an enjoyable watch with just enough compelling story and just enough hammy acting to pull the concept off. I recommend it for one watch through.
Treasure Planet (2002)
Best Disney Movie
When this movie released I was too young to give it the support it deserves. Now looking back, having watched this movie more than 10 times in the past year alone, I wish it got more love at release. If you haven't watched it I highly recommend it. The animation is breathtaking, the story is well written and the sound track fits perfectly. If you have seen it go watch it again. You know you want to.
My Little Pony: The Movie (2017)
Not good for general audiences or die hard fans.
Being an avid fan of the show I went into this movie with high hopes. I left frustrated and disappointed. It took everything likable about the show and tried to boil it down to some confectionery sweet glittery nonsense. Any fan of the show will likely tell you they are a fan of the writing and subtle lessons in the show. They love watching realistic and believable characters and appreciate the lengths that the show goes to to no patronize its audience. This is even more important if you are showing the show to a younger audience. You want children to gain something and grow from what you put in front of them. You want entertainment to treat your children with the same kind of respect that you treat your children with. This movie doesn't do that. It treats the audience like they are idiotic, often beating you over the head with its lesson.
From a fan of the shows perspective my problem is the mischaracterization of the main characters. Each character has their flaws, but are always inherently likable. Even Twilights neurotic tendencies don't prevent her from being a likable character in the show. In the movie all of that is thrown out the window. There is even regularly scenes with Twilight manipulating her friends. She also attempts to steal from people who have been nothing but hospitable to her. She makes barely any attempt to understand the new people around her even though she is the princess of friendship. What makes it worse is that the movie is clearly set after she has progressed through and dealt with many of these issues before. It feels like they needed her to do horrific things and completely betray her character in order to progress the story, which was probably their first mistake. If your a fan of the show, just go watch season 7's finale which is out. If you want to take your kids to something, I recommend going to redbox and getting one of the equestria girls movies instead. They are much better as far as teaching a lesson to children goes.
It (2017)
Fun and Creepy
This movie isn't scary, but it is creepy. It manages to have a good dark atmosphere with some clever writing sprinkled in. As with all horror and with comedy what you find scary or funny will be entirely subjective, but this movie does manage to create a beautifully creepy experience whether you are scared or not. It is highly enjoyable and I am particularly fond of the acting performances given by the children. I would highly recommend seeing this movie in theaters.
Lady of the Lake (1998)
Cheesy but entertaining
I remember this movie from when I was younger and have actively sought it out. I only recently managed to get ahold of it again. It has a rather unique and memorable storyline that is a good mixture of romance, fantasy and horror. It has some lovely aesthetics and some unsavory ones. All in all though it still held my attention and I loved it just as much now as I did then. Its definitely a take it or leave it kind of film though. You'll either love it or hate it and it is rather low budget so you aren't going to get anything spectacular in that department.
Strange Magic (2015)
Impressively Mature, Yet still somehow innocent
I have seen quite a lot of hate towards this movie, but I can't quite see where it comes from. It seems to be a either you hate it or love it movie. The animation was dark yet beautiful. The music was well timed and perfect for where it was placed in the story. I particularly liked how it truly stuck to the theme of looking past looks and not judging a book by it's cover, unlike a certain Disney movie with the same premise. Bog isn't cruel because of his looks in the beginning, he is cruel due to the pain he feels, which is a realistic way to depict it. He doesn't magically become handsome when Marriane falls for him, but stays the way he is and they fall in love due to similar personality traits and experiences rather than because of either of their looks. It also show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder from both standpoints. We as the audience might find Marriane to be the attractive one due to her being conventionally attractive, but the movie makes it clear that she doesn't fit what Bog finds to be physically attractive initially. Sometimes who we perceive to be unattractive can become attractive if you get to know them. I think that this movie portrays that very well.
