Speechless
7 November 2022
This is pure genius. I am quite a critical person but I can't fault it. I have just finished binging the whole series (I just had to keep watching) and already I cannot wait to rewatch this and see all the details you miss first time around. The characters are incredibly intricate and well rounded. The story is a rollercoaster of a ride that left my mouth hanging open nearly every episode - the twists and turns are just spectacular. The direction, the writing, the cinematography, the casting, EVERYTHING about this is unbelievable. We need more content like this from the incredibly talented Daisy May Cooper!! My favourite series of the year by far. I don't know if a second series has been planned or whether this is a standalone series - either way, the world needs more stories like this. The writing is inspired and I am now a big fan of the creators behind this. Excellent. Brilliant. Synonyms. Just amazing! Go watch it!

Possum (2018)
5/10
Had its moments but overall didn't go anywhere
4 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I had heard about Possum as being a very dark and twisted film. I knew about the story before watching it so had it slightly spoiled in advance. I think it had a lot of potential; a lot of the shots looked amazing, the premise/plot was very disturbing and the actors were incredible.

The problem I have with Possum is that it didn't really go anywhere. To set things up in this dull world we have to see the characters in their setting, sure, but I felt like two thirds of the film were just the set up. There was a lot of great acting in this film but I feel like there could've been more dialogue to support it a bit more - at least in between the surreal images of the puppet and main character. Although the characters were thought out, I don't think they had enough material to show who they were. It was kind of one note up until the last 15 minutes. I wish there was more variety.

With dark films like this, they will always have a certain tone to them and Possum did this brilliantly... but it just didn't go anywhere. It is about an emotionally damaged man unpacking his past trauma and unfortunately that's all it is.

The end scene was very disturbing and I really admire the fact they didn't go for shock / explicit scenes but it didn't feel like a real payoff, in the sense that he was finally free or felt relief or... something (with trauma like that, I suppose you can't really ever have a "payoff" - maybe that was the point, I don't know?)

I applaud all of the people who worked on this film as they did an excellent job and I hope it speaks to people!

Bo Burnham: Inside (2021 TV Special)
10/10
Masterpiece from a genius
16 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I started watching Bo shortly after he created what. And I thought he was brilliant, really sharp, really funny and just the right amount of honesty. I liked Make Happy - didn't love it - but parts of it were brilliant.

Then Inside came along. I watched this at about 2am in the morning when I couldn't sleep and holy moly, it woke me up. It woke me up to the struggles of lockdown, the truth about social media and the internet. It woke me up to the fact that even someone as fantastically talented as Bo Burnham has moments, even years, when his mental health is at an ATL (Atlanta).

There is so much work, tears and thought put into this special. I am amazed at how poignant, honest, moving, detailed and hilarious this man can be. I recommend that everyone watches it. I also can't believe it was all shot in one room - that's just insane. He is so very talented and although I am a fan and I am biased, I do think that everyone should watch this and learn from it, whether that's about mental health, the World Wide Web or how a nice lighting kit can change filmmaking even if you can only film in a limited space.

Heal the world with comedy!

This is one of Edgar Wright's first of many successes! It's just brilliant! It's one of my favourite shows and I love rewatching it and noticing all of the different little laughs!

The Thick of It (2005–2012)

Politics knowledge not compulsory!
18 November 2019
Although Hugh's actor is replaced, do not think that it's one of those shows that gets worse once it changes the cast; it only gets better! Malcolm is my favourite character and I try to quote him at least twice a week. The writing and ad-libbing in this show is genius! The cast is fabulous (minus Hugh's actor). Although this show is about politics it's not ABOUT politics; it's about the relationships and hilarious situations of each episode. Highly recommend!!

Disappointing...
18 November 2019
At the start, I thought this film had potential. I was wrong. It's not that it's bad, it's just really not good! It's not memorable at all and there's nothing original or interesting about it. I don't wish I hadn't watched it but it hasn't added anything to my life by watching it.

Coraline (2009)
10/10
One of my favourite films!
25 August 2016
This is an absolutely outstanding movie which is one of my all-time favourites. Films that are adapted from books are always hard to stay true to because if you filmed an entire book it would be hours long. But even though there isn't everything from the book in the film, it is brilliant. If you liked The Nightmare Before Christmas, then you will love this!

The story is of a young girl who moves to a new home and discovers another world inside a little door, where everything is better but this wonderful place isn't exactly what it seems.

I remember watching this film at the cinema and my mum got up to go to the bathroom and I went with her, I waited outside the loos and she said "Aren't you going" and I said "No I just wanted to get away from that film". No don't be put off by that comment because it was the first creepy film I'd watched and I was about 7. But I was determined to love this film for what it was, so I watched it over and over and I am no longer scared by it!

The animation is stunning and the work that everyone has done on the film is magnificent *small applause*. It is so amazing that everything is made by hand and they have been so creative with what they use; the blossoms on the trees are painted popcorn and one of the flowers is a dog toy that has been cut in half.

I would say when Coraline realises what is really happening in the Other World, the scenes become a little disturbing but I would just watch it because it's a great film.

I don't want to put you off this film because it is wonderful! I am so glad it has been the start of a new journey for Laika as well, with films like ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls following after it. I personally think that Coraline is the best films (so far) that Laika has made because you can really see all the love that has gone into making this film.

It's amazing. Go watch it.

The Evil Dead (1981)
8/10
Wow. Just Wow.
25 August 2016
So the whole point of a horror movie is to scare your audience. Let's just say Evil Dead does not disappoint.

I bought A Nightmare On Elm Street and The Evil Dead to see some horror classics. I watched Nightmare first and wasn't creeped out much. I then watched The Evil Dead (this was quite late at night) Big mistake.

It is known as one of the goriest and scariest films ever made and it lives up to its expectations. The suspense is fantastic and the film builds up to a brilliant ending. It looks like an old classic which may not be scary compared to films today, but this has scared me way more than any horror film from the 2010s.

Overall, brilliant film because it scares the heeby jeebies out of you!
