Môsô dairinin: Kin no kutsu (2004)
2 episodes in, this one hooked me
I enjoyed this one. I felt like it had a lot of personality, from Ichi's character as a relatable/funny yet narcissistic/paranoid young kid, the interludes with dream sequences, and the surreal animation style during the more tense moments, it really drew me in! I really like when animation can tranform itself seamlessly between different styles. I did feel bad for that poor kid who's just trying to be nice to Ichi, not sure why he got the bat from that slugger guy when the guy from the first episode was much nastier and actually sort of deserved it as opposed to this kid. I'm guessing maybe it has to do with what each individual person is feeling pressured by? Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing where this show goes, as I really have no clue where it's headed.
The Boys: Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men (2020)
Best of the show
I've watched through the end of S2, and this episode is definitely my favorite of the whole series. Each side (the Boys and the Seven) is wrought with tension as everyone in each group is fighting with each other. The intensity between all of the characters has never been higher. There is also a great sense of scale. More than any other episode, this one feels "big" - it takes us so many places, through so many memorable scenes (of course the whale scene, and the one with stormfront at the end). The conflicts between the characters are also really clear and dynamic, while the rest of S2 suffered from a lack of clear conflict (also the characters all unified together on each side by the end of S2, which is never nearly as interesting). One of the best conflicts was definitely with Kimiko's brother - the arguments and scenes featuring this conflict were all amazing. I wish they had let this tension between all the characters brew throughout the season rather than resolving most of it before the last few episodes, as it would have been a lot more interesting, and it would have probably been more satisfying to watch when the "Boys" inevitably unified in the end.
The Boys: Good for the Soul (2019)
Interesting building episode
Lots of interesting things in this episode, and lots of conflict in most of the stories. Also the plot with Frenchie and the girl they freed finally got intriguing in this episode. I'll admit, Stralight's speech was a little heavy-handed, but pretty much everything she said rang true, at least I think so, and so I didn't really have any issues with it. Adding to that, it's interesting comparing the idolization of superheros to religion because there are a lot of parallels there. They did sort of portray Christians as stupid close-minded people in the story though, which isn't very sensitive to that group and I could see that part being offensive. But all in all, I wasn't bothered by any of it, and I thought the episode was quite interesting. Also the music in the final scene was great, love that song.
Chuck: Chuck Versus the Ring: Part II (2010)
Best Chuck episode
This has been a great season of Chuck. I do have to say though, I felt that the two episodes before this were a bit weak, even if they did have some cool moments, but this final episode is where everything really paid off. Also the writing and the editing was really clear and well done in this episode, which I think is what the prior two episodes lacked somewhat. Everything comes to a really great close in this episode. Also, to the person who said it was "rushed", I think you may have missed the first part of the two part finale, "Chuck vs the Subway". Anyways, it was a really cool episode, and it truly felt like a culmination of everything leading up to it, both stylistically and story -wise. In other words, this episode perfectly captures the essence of the show (the action, the lightheartedness, the darker conflicts, etc.). 10/10
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Its just... alright
Its nothing special, I think that more than enough reviewers have said what made the episode bad, but there were a few good bits, especially Jon Snow's ending - I liked it because I didn't expect him to become an outcast and miss out on the heroic end that I thought he was going to have. It was probably the one part of this episode that wasn't predictable, which was nice. I already had my expectations lowered drastically by season 7 - the Beyond the Wall episode and Spoils of War were really bad fan service and made me lose all hope for GoT... so that's probably why this last season didnt disappoint me as much as some other viewers. S8 wasnt great, but at least it was slightly better than s7.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
Not the show it originally was, but still pretty good
Cons:
- Pointless romance/party scenes (which weren't that much of the episode though)
- bad logic (Dany not seeing the ships, etc)
- A few uninteresting scenes here and there
Pros:
- night king is gone (I much prefer the conflict over the seven kingdoms than the whole whitewalker storyline)
- Conflict between Jon and Dany is very interesting
- Tyrion and Varys conversation (this is one of the only scenes from this season which reminded me of the great conflicts in the earlier seasons)
- last scene (okay, it was predictable and drawn out, but it was nevertheless very well done)
- Bronn's scene (he wasnt there for long, but it was nice to see him on the show again)
Overall: 7.5/10, but i'll round up to an 8/10 to balance out the 1 star reviews.
Also, to everyone who rated it under 5, i don't think the episode deserves that bad a score. It certainly wasn't the GoT that we all loved in previous seasons, instead becoming more predictable, but it wasn't terrible. I think we just have to come to terms with the fact that with D&D instead of GRRM, the show would inevitably go down in quality. Accept that fact, and I think you'll find that you are more open to enjoying the show for what it is, rather than what you want it to be.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Liked it
Cool movie for sure, I enjoyed it a lot. However, I don't think it should be given 10/10s because it wasnt THAT good. I'll explain why, going through the main different things that made the film:
Music (11/10)
Queen rocks. Every song was great.
Story/characters (7/10)
At the beginning it was very clunky, not having a main goal or motivation. Also it hopped forwards in time a lot, which can sometimes work in movies, but not to the extent they did it in this one. It just felt rushed. Also a lot of the scenes werent really anything more than just showing us how some of the songs were made, which is interesting, just not relevant to the story. However, later the story gained a driving force as it settled into the time period just before Live Aid. Before, I would say the story was a 5/10 stars, but by the end it probably reached around 9/10, a really solid film by the end. Conflict, important character motivations, and interesting drama were only introduced about halfway into the film. I wish they just started the film then and cut out the beginning.
Acting (9/10)
Top notch, of course. The only thing I would say was negative for this was that Malek's acting at the start was a bit shaky, but improved greatly by the halfway point in the film. Perhaps this factor also led to me disliking the start of the movie. All the supporting characters were great as well as Malek. I especially liked the actor who played Brian May, I thought he was perfect for the role.
Cinematography (6/10)
Nothing special. Just your average cinematography.
Editing (5/10)
This really was the worst element of the film in my opinion. The editing at the beginning of the film was a bit clunky, distracting from the story. My least favorite part was the artificial blurring, especially in the interviewing scene. I assume this was done in editing, not in cinematography, because it looked so unnatural. It was extremely distracting. I think it was meant to make the scene disorienting, but all it did was make me less invested in the movie, because the effect was so annoying.
Overall:
38/50 = 7.6/10
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Rating one star to balance out all those 10/10s
This movie doesn't deserve to be rated so high. Having a bunch more fan service, action scenes, and deaths (which was a pretty unsatisfying ending in my opinion) than the other marvel movies does not make it better. And it definitely doesn't qualify this movie to be in the top 100 films of all time (currently ranked #51 right now).
Now, this isnt a bad movie. I sort of enjoyed it at times, even though it was a bit hard to keep track of the characters. Im just saying it isn't really any better than the other marvel movies, so should be ranked similarly (so around 7 to 8 stars). It isn't anything special, and definitely isnt a "masterpiece" as one reviewer put it. Its just an entertaining action movie (although the ending was not entertaining and was just disappointing).
My feelings about this movie might just be because I dont really care about the characters. I was annoyed every time a character came on the screen and people started to applaud, and I didnt really care that half the characters died at the end because I wasnt emotionally invested in them (because there are just too many of them in my opinion). The only characters that were sort of sad to see die were spiderman (because he sounded so scared) and nick fury (because Sam L Jackson is awesome). Otherwise, I was just waiting for that depressing end to be over. Maybe if I read the comics I would be more affected by this film. Im assuming that is where most of the 10/10 stars came from. However, a movie shouldn't depend on people having read the comics, and as someone who hasnt read them and doesnt care about most of the characters because of the lack of time the movies spend developing the characters, this movie was slightly disappointing and also doesnt deserve the rating it has now.
Dexter: Hello, Dexter Morgan (2009)
Great penultimate episode!
Things are definitely coming to a tense close for this season. I loved Lithgow's acting in this episode, it was top-notch, especially at the end. And I totally didn't expect that moment with Christine's character at the end!
The only thing I didn't like was the title of the episode. The title totally gave away the end, which would have been so much more surprising without the title.
Also this episode wasn't quite on the same level of intensity of the episode Hungry Man, which I thought to be one of the best episodes so far, but it was still great.
Westworld: Kiksuya (2018)
Good, but.....
I liked this episode. It was definitely high quality, the visuals and cinematography were obviously great, as anyone who has watched it knows. The storyline was... well it was pretty good, although it was a bit too simple I think.
So why didnt I give this a 10/10 like most of the other reviewers? Its not because it was lacking in quality. If this had been part of an ongoing story and contributed to the overall plot of the season I would probably have given it a 9/10. However, a filler episode, even a good one, is still just filler.
This detracts from the pace of the season, adding what seems to be unnecessary information just to take up an episode. Yes, the little twist in the end was cool I guess, but was it really necessary? Does it really add anything to the overall season? I dont think so. Additionally, this episode is right near the end of the season, when the sorylines should be coming together towards a conclusion, not spreading out even more.
This isnt the only episode that had this problem. The whole season so far has suffered from less focus than the first season. While S1 seemed to know, at least a little bit, where it was heading (and boy, the payoff in the final 4 episodes was great), S2 seems to be meandering through different stories with unnecessary filler.
So to sum it all up-- yes, this is a good episode and I would recommend seeing it, but dont expect the season's storyline to move forwards much or you will be disappointed like I was.
Luther (2010)
Best cop show
Don't go into this show expecting the average cop show with twists and turns that you never follow and characters that you never forget. This is truly a great show with a great plot and some truly twisted stuff. The main character, unlike many other police in cop shows, will do anything, illegal or not, to get justice in the way he thinks is best. In one episode, since they can't find evidence to convict a psychopathic killer, Luther plants evidence. This twist on the regular cop shows is, I have to say, extremely satisfying. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a great show, but also is okay with some pretty dark things.
Memento (2000)
This is literally the BEST MOVIE EVER!!!
Are you bored of all the "normal" movies coming out today, with all their simplistic plots and all the twists you can see coming a mile away? Do you like a movie that is intelligent, unpredictable, and makes you think both during the movie and weeks after? Then this movie is for you.
It is a groundbreaking film that is totally out of the box. It is about a man who suffers from a condition that makes him forget things that just recently happened. Therefore, he writes notes on his body and on photographs so he can remember things. However, many of these notes are vague because he didn't have much time, and he ends up doing some things that he doesn't even know why he wanted to do it.
The really crazy thing about this movie, though, is the way it is told. One timeline in the movie starts at the end of the story and works backwards to the middle; the other one starts at the beginning and goes to the middle. The "main" storyline, the one that goes backwards, is the best because it always keeps you guessing and wondering why he wrote certain notes. There are many plot twists along the way.
So, basically what I'm saying is that if you haven't watched this movie, you should definitely try it. In my opinion, it is the best movie ever made.
