Disobedience (2017)
SLOW SLOW SLooooowwwwwwwww
Couldn't get through this incredibly slow film in one sitting. The topic interests me because in a recent lifetime I was Jewish, and then in this life I converted to Judaism and married into a Jewish family, where I was the shiksa... That said, Ugh ugh ugh,,....... Because it's about Hasidic Jews they slowed everything down to a painfully tedious level. I get the serious tone, because of the death of the main character's father, but where had she been all these years? If she cared about her dad at all, why did she not at least write to him over the years, and to her own sister? Even if she was ostracized for leaving the group. I can't imagine that she would actually be welcomed back in real life. I found myself immediately disliking her, the main character, because she is presumptuous, inconsiderate and rude, right from the get go. 1. She makes a comment, suggesting that her host, let his wife do that chore, whatever it was, then,. 2. She smokes in her sister and brother-in-law's home, without asking.... WHO DOes that? 3. I don't care if it is her sister, She asks a very rude question of her host and hostess about their marriage, I.e. Are you happy? Uh, what could they say? 4. THEN, Instead of being respectful of the guys praying at her father's grave, she rudely interrupts them, and scares them off. In real life you show deference to others, ESPECIALLY in this death - graveyard situation. You stand back, and you show respect, you wait, or leave and return later, when u can be alone. Really, is she five and without any manners whatsoever? Did she grow up in a barn, as they say?
5. The She dresses inappropriately with a short skirt, for where she's at and who she's with. The basic principle and saying , 'when in Rome do as the Romans Do' has escaped this wayward child. Although I don't blame her in the least for choosing a life of freedom over the obligations and constrictions of fitting into a VERY structured way of living in a religious community. 6. Then the sister and brother-in-law share a very intimate moment and the guy is cold and stoic. Ugh... really poor character development, because you cannot relate to ANY of them. 7. Then there's another sex scene between the sis and BIL, and again, it looks like OK sex, but crap, there is absolutely ZERO depiction of actual love, caring or connection between those two. ... The film is so so unrewarding. At this point in the marriage I would be seriously considering suicide, if I was unable to escape Fast! So, to me the movie missed the mark by a long long long shot. I'm glad life isn't as bleak and deeply depressing as this film makes it out to be. And characters so vacuous. Even in a religious community there is great depth, passion, love and much more that the film missed entirely.
Woman in Gold (2015)
SLOW but so is life
Excellent acting, which makes the story completely believable. But I must confess it was hard to like the stoic, cold personality of Mrs. Altman, until the end. Definitely Loved this movie, but it hit a nerve, and for me it is a very sad commentary on a greedy and jealous world. I've learned too much about the holocaust, and know people affected by the cruelty and murderous actions of the Germans, while the world stood by and did absolutely nothing about it for the most part. I Followed this story in the News years ago. And I'm delighted this film was created to share the important history, of another aspect of what was done to the Jewish people. I honestly do t know how How Germany can live with itself, and it should be doing absolutely everything in its power to return money, homes, jewelry, art and more to the Jewish survivors or relatives of the victims of the holocaust.
Free Guy (2021)
Loved IT!
Loved loved loved this movie! Ryan Reynolds and his co-star are both absolutely amazing characters . I saw this film in the movie theater at least three times. Wow, where to start, it is so creative, so fun, so interesting. Really really amazing story line. Whoever wrote, produced and directed the film , all of them are brilliant! The movie is so far out in many ways, yet so engrossing and believable. Bringing a video game to life has been done before, but this film took the concept to a new level, setting the bar higher for everything to come in This Genre. The spaces portrayed in the film were also beautiful, captivating, and dynamic, like where Ryan's character lived, to the bank, to the evil computer geniuse's clothing and office space, and everyone being afraid of him, to the disappearing landscape on the water. Where did all these aspects of the film come from that pulled you in, making you love the story, and not wanting it to end.
Elvis (2022)
Not a fan, til now.
I loved this movie, and Elvis predates me, so I knew little to nothing about him. I thought this movie gives a really interesting overview of Elvis Presley's life, and some of what he went through. He died when I was still young, and just recall that itt was a big deal. Amazing how one person, his manager, worked hard to manipulate and control Elvis so he could get rich off of him. I really enjoyed hearing about his fascinating life as a little kid, and then how he got into music, who he was drawn to in the industry, and then his family life, and the efforts of the establishment to co trol him. I had no idea at all about what he went through. So sad, so tragic in many ways.
The Lost City (2022)
Loved The Lost CITY
Fantastic film with all the high entertainment value that we've come to expect from super-stars Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock. I thought the story premise was super cute, loved the lead character Played by Bullock in the Sequined outfit. Loved the car episode on the cliff. Love the rescue scene with the handsome devil played by Brad Pitt. What's not to love about this film? What could have been better? For me and my mom, nothing. Loved the writers pushy, overly assertive manager. And the scene with the leaches was priceless. Thank goodness this fun comedy ended with the romance blooming between the writer, and her book cover model, who the author had dismissed as an empty-headed pretty face. So so so cute. Great chick flick. Saw it probably 3 times. This movie does not disappoint if you like the stars that are in it.
Dog (2022)
Excellent Lighthearted Fun Film
Saw this comedy a while ago. It was a pleasant surprise, especially since I'm not particularly fond of big German Shepards. My mom and I enjoyed this movie a lot. I'm pretty much a sap for mushy films and didn't find this one sappy at all. Definitely NOT a tear jerker for me or mom. Although there's at least one touching scene. I highly recommend it if just wanting a very cute, certainly nothing heavy kind of escapism. The main character (not the German Shepard), is quite the cutie of course, Channing Tatum, and I loved loved loved him in the comedy he did more recently with Sandra Bullock. Those two definitely have the magic going on between them in film.
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Nearly Perfect
So much is written in other reviews of Three Thousand Years of Longing, this will be brief. It's an Incredibly creative and beautiful film. What I find common in many US made movies, which leaves me wanting, is a lack of character development. The depiction of a fantastical story is so so well done, it's delightful. In fact, I look forward to seeing this movie again. Although, when the crux of a story is about love and passion or desire, that's what we want to feel from the characters. So how does this film portray the intensity of 'three thousand years of longing' in the characters' desires for each other?
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
No shrooms needed for this Flick!
Loved loved loved this movie. Omg, talk about mind blowing. I can't wait to see it again. The creators flew way, way outside the "box" for this one. I especially loved the Depiction of the Chinese culture, and all the details. Be prepared for a new version of reality. So fun, so wild, so imaginative, don't want to spoil it with details, but must see on big screen if you can!
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Ugh. Hated Birds of Prey
Like I said in the caption, I absolutely hated this film. I probably tried but was unable to sleep through it. If a minus ten was possible I'd give it that score. The character Robbie plays, Harley Quinn is soooo sooo unlikable. Her ridiculous squeaky horrible voice was enough to make me want to leave in the first 5 minutes, but I was with someone else. All the violence on top of her voice was more than I could bear.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Excellent Flight
I had low expectations since I'm not too much of a fan of military films. But, that said, my mom and I enjoyed this film a lot, and I saw it twice. I grew up having to fly with my dad, so my appreciation of flight is a bit different than the norm. The conflicts between the guys was very realistic, as was the romance, (however the lead guy should get out of Scientology before thinking anyone would really want to date him). The flying was amazing and awesome, I loved it.
Sometimes Always Never (2018)
Hillarious
Don't understand the poor scores for Sometimes Always, Never.... Because I Love love love this perfectly cast, dry, slow moving, one of a kind English comedy. I needed a good laugh tonight, after watching the intense, historical drama, Elizabeth I. Sometimes Always Never is brilliant in every way.
Mack & Rita (2022)
Teen Movie?
Cute, but not nearly meaty enough. Go all in, one way or another, make it much more interesting. Character development would help. The theme or story line is perhaps way too worn out. ( IMDB has a spoiler in their description of the film.) I lived in Palm Springs so I did want to see it for that reason, but there's very little footage of the area.
Misha and the Wolves (2021)
Excellent story of Survival
Super interesting story of how a woman survives as a child after her parents are deported to the gas chambers. This is a documental on a fascinating adventure. IMBd needs a spoiler alert in their description of the film. ; (
The Way Back (2010)
Incredible Story
Well done is an understatement. This beautiful drama of survival and the will to live, is one to never forget. I saw it a while ago, and it's time to see it again. I loved this movie!
My One and Only (2009)
Great Movie Based on a True Story
This may be a chick-flick , but anyone with a sense of how tough life can be, even w/ a dose of humor, will enjoy it. Renee zelwegger is an amazing actress, & brings believablity to this film. This is one of her best! So glad I discovered this film!
The Gift (2000)
Story Makes No Sense
Well, I suffered through 40 minutes of this non-sensical story. I won't give details, so I don't spoil anything. I was really hopEful with the huge cast of stars...but I give it a BIG thumbs down.
Easter Sunday (2022)
Excellent comedy in EVERY WAY!
Great for all ages! My mom loved this sweet movie too! People who gave it a poor score may love the violence in Bullet Train. Easter Sunday was pure fun. The characters and their dramas We're 100% believable. Kudos to all involved in creating this films for those of us who want decent funny entertainment, not blood and gore. Previews for this movie were sorely lacking, and I'm at the movies 2X a week. If the box office numbers are poor that would be why.
Bullet Train (2022)
BLOOD SOAKED HUMOR
The acting was excellent.....and.... If you love, love, love blood soaked violence, just for fun, this is the film for you. I should have listened to the warning in the preview and passed on this one. Very graphic depictions of killing throughout most of the film.
