Zootopia (2016)
What a wonderful film
Zootopia is without a doubt the best film I have seen this year. It is hilarious, brilliantly put together, gorgeous animation, and is full of political satire and wonderful humor for adults and children alike.
Not only does it have a wonderful plot, complete with twists and lovable characters, but it leaves children and adults alike with some profound lessons. It makes fun of racial divisions, political ridiculousness, and the important lesson for children that you do not have to be what society claims you are.
It is so refreshing to have someone make a film for children that isn't the usual "everyone is a princess" drivel.
I would give this film 11 stars if I could!
Holy Hell (2016)
Holy Hell - A Cliché Movie
Holy Hell is a movie that attempts to show what life inside a cult is really like. The movie starts out interesting for sure. The archival footage is engaging and some of it seems very beautiful for the people participating.
However, at some point in the movie the whole plot devolves into the cliché "cult propganda" buzzwords we hear so much about in Hollywood. Brainwashing, sexual perversion, etc...
I saw this film at Sundance because the news articles about it discussed how many of the former members came forward to tell their experience. Unfortunately in the film what I saw were a close group of friends who all had the same story. When I watch a documentary I expect to see all the points of view that culminate in me, the viewer, being allowed to reach my own decision. Instead what I saw was a carefully constructed narrative to lead the viewer to a specific conclusion. By the end of the film I felt like I was having Will Allen's point of view thrown at me, without any exploration of the supposed 100s of other people involved.
In short, the film trades in it's initial joy and wonder for a run of the mill "this guy made me do it" cult story.
Deadpool (2016)
Excellent movie! A little too gory
I thought this movie was hilarious.
Extremely well acted, the characters were memorable and likable, and Ryan Reynolds is hysterical and makes the perfect dead pool. The fight scenes were well choreographed, the female love interest is believable, and dead pools friend is just as hilarious as he is. The whole thing was marvelous.
The only reason I didn't give it 10 stars is because for some reason they thought having it excessively gory would make it better and it doesn't. A flying limb can be funny, but we don't need to see all the dangling tissue and stump of a leg attached.
Definitely an R rated movie, I would not take kids to this, period.
