The Power Of Music
24 January 2017
This movie tells the story of a young Palestinian called Kareem, who lives in the city of Lod/Lydda in Israel and dreams of a career as a hip- hop-artist. The history of the city makes it an area of conflict between Jews and Muslims and soon, Kareem gets into a lot of trouble unwillingly.

Although this is the main plot, several other issues are addressed, such as drug-dealing, religious fundamentalism and all kinds of family issues. Very much for 100 minutes.

It may seem like this film is political. But this is not the case. In fact, it shows problems on both sides. Neither the Israelis, nor the Palestinians are shown as the "good ones".

The main message is another one: It is about the importance and power of music to unite people. In this case, it is about hip-hop and rap. But don't worry: You don't need to be familiar with the underground-culture to enjoy this movie and its sound.

But some weaknesses are still there. The acting of some supporting characters is very poor and the film is told in a confusing way at the beginning. Also, it is a weird mixture between a feel-good-movie and a drama.

However, I generally recommend this movie, for it's a enjoyable experience overall.

Beautiful - Stunning - Gut-wrenching
16 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
With "The Neon Demon", Nicolas Winding Refn delivered nothing less than the best movie of 2016. Even when I watched it for the second time, it still kept me on the edge of my seat.

Elle Fanning plays a young model, who wants to make her fortune in Los Angeles. Acting like a shy and naive girl, she soon reveals her true nature. The young actress delivers a great performance, making all the other actors seem like amateurs. And we're talking about Jena Malone and Keanu Reeves here.

But the true stars of the film are its stunning visuals. Whether it's the beautiful skyline of L.A. or the neon lights and geometric forms of a fashion show, where everything is artificial and just Elle Fanning represents the natural world. Everything about the optic is just outstanding. The music is also great and remarkable.

Another strength of this film are the many quiet, intense and sometimes disgusting moments, for example when Keanu Reeves orally penetrates Elle Fanning with a knife or when Jena Malone has sex with a dead woman.

Nicolas Winding Refn shows what he needs to show in order, to deliver the overall message of the film, criticizing the sick world of fashion and beauty.

This movie is for people, who want to have a unique experience and have no problems with disturbing imagery. For everyone, who is not afraid to see.

Asian Cinema At Its Very Finest
10 January 2017
"The Handmaiden" is a deeply romantic story full of erotic tension, but also a highly intelligent thriller. It is told in three parts, with countless conspiracies and turns. Everything that you think you know, will turn out in an unexpected way.

But not only the story convinced me. The visuals are outstanding and the general look of the film is close to perfection. That is cinematography at its best. The music of the film is fitting and contributes to the great atmosphere.

The only weakness of this movie are its overacted and sometimes silly male characters. But the main focus lies on the two female protagonists, who are convincing.

For me, this film is a must-watch for fans of Asian cinema and everyone else, who is into new exciting ways to tell great stories on the big screen.
