God's Favorite Idiot (2022)
Not a bad show to watch if you have a few hours
Honestly, with the short episode and season length, it's worth it just to watch for some decent laughs.
However, the show has very little payoff including it's supposed central premise. The fact is that the main character isn't an idiot. He's a pretty average and likable dude so my expectation was to see more slapstick and silly humour, (think Jake Peralta from Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
There were other aspects of the narrative that never paid off this season such as Amily being a pretty fierce sword fighter. It seemed clear to me that the season would end with her having a legit sword fight with either the four horsemen or Satan herself. Unfortunately that never happened and we're left to wonder why.
Joke frequency is also a problem. I found that there was very little legitimate laughter. Most of the time I was waiting for the jokes to arrive.
Lastly, I don't see any reason why this show is rated for Mature Audiences only. There's some swearing, mentions of drug use, and some light violence. There's no blood or nudity. The rating never seemed earned.
Overall I expected better.
Seutateueob (2020)
Astoundingly good from start to finish
This was my first time watching a Korean TV show so I didn't really know what to expect. I'm glad I gave it a try though because it was a truly incredible show. The story was told beautifully and emotionally, the acting was really natural, and overall the show did a good job of juggling time between the romance story and the tech story.
There were some minor inconsistencies but nothing to really detract from the show.
I'd highly recommend Start-up to anyone. If this is the type of quality TV that South Korea can produce, I'll be looking to get into more of their shows.
Killjoys: Don't Stop Beweaving (2019)
Johnny dances around in Pajamas. Where's the option for 11 stars?
I bloody love this show.
Killjoys has always pushed the envelope when it comes to storytelling, weird sci-fi nonsense, fight scenes, sex, and green goo-filled aliens. I guess they weren't done yet because this episode started off brilliantly...
...with Johnny dancing around in his pajamas, caressing the ship.
This episode is just one of the many episodes that should convince people that Killjoys can tell a serious story of love, family, and loss, without taking itself all that seriously. They struck an absolutely perfect balance as always.
Krypton (2018)
A separation from available shows pays off
I am not the type of person who watches every single superhero movie and TV offering. I don't really follow comics either. However, I was a huge fan of Smallville and I have also watched the current Greg Berlanti shows, (Arrow, Flash, Legends, Supergirl, Black Lightning). I can say that my original fear of Krypton was that it was going to be similar to the Berlanti offerings with their nauseating lack of subtext, their "baddie of the week" formula, and the way they shove social justice down your throat.
Krypton is different. This isn't some 22-episode season of filler. The 10-episode format means that we get a coherent story without the extra baggage. Little time is wasted aligning the characters to drive the story forward. I am a fan of efficiency and Krypton is certainly that.
I also found that the acting was a step up from other superhero TV show offerings. The Berlanti shows certainly run the gamut between stunning acting performances and cringy garbage, and Smallville had their off-days. I was pleasantly surprised with all of the acting performances in Krypton. There are many actors whom I have never seen before and they do great justice to their characters, while more prominent actors also do a great job of separating themselves from their previous performances.
Krypton's Brainiac is also a far cry from previous offerings. He's actually scary, intense, and overall believable as an opposing force. The whole tone of the show is much darker and more gritty, and his presence is a large contributing factor.
I guess there are two types of superhero TV show fans; the ones who want a blend of serious and comedy where they get to see their favourite heroes using their powers, and ones that are looking for something to break the mold. Frankly, I am pleasantly surprised that we have a show like Krypton where we get a detailed glimpse into life on Krypton before Superman without getting bogged down in superpowers and flashy costumes.
It's not for everyone given the many 1-star reviews here on IMDB, but if you recently watched shows like Legends of Tomorrow or The Flash and thought to yourself, "there has to be something better than a giant Furby killing a demon", then I recommend giving Krypton a try.
I enjoyed it from start to finish and look forward to seeing what Season 2 can bring.
The Orville (2017)
Very Enjoyable. A lighter side of the future.
I have been excited about this show for a long time. I am both a fan of Star Trek and Family Guy, and I also have great respect for Seth Macfarlane as a man of science and logic, (as weird as that sounds from a guy made famous for a character such as Peter Griffin).
The one major thing that is important to note is that regardless of your personal feeling about Seth Macfarlane, you can enjoy this show. You don't have to like his style of humour. The focus is on the story and introducing the characters in the first episode, and very little time is wasted on getting everything moving. The comedy is spread out well enough that it's present and enjoyable without taking away focus from the show's intent.
Star Trek has always been a great franchise but the shows can be dark and depressing, and seem to ignore some basic human tendencies, (Lieutenant Malloy having to pee was interesting because we never saw a Starfleet officer step away from their post to relieve themselves). It works for Star Trek because of the incredible storytelling, characters, and philosophy. However, The Orville gives a lighter take on the concept without glossing over human nature.
We're only one episode in so it's simply a first impression and it's hard to make a solid judgement, but I like the characters so far, I enjoy what Seth Macfarlane is trying to accomplish with this ode to Star Trek, and I am optimistic for its future.
Killjoys (2015)
Very surprising quality and intensity. Love it!
I was immediately hooked on this show because it offers a Sci-Fi experience that doesn't seem dumbed down or censored for a younger audience. The setting is incredible, and the characters are just perfect. I am a sucker for a strong, kick-ass female lead, and Dutch is just perfect. Dutch, Johnny, and D'avin make a great team and I just love their chemistry.
I am also a huge fan of shows that know how to properly utilise secondary characters, so it's really nice that we get to see great characters such as Pawter Simms, Pree, Alvis, and Khlyen. This is akin to the incredible supporting cast of Battlestar Galactica and how they all help to carry the show forward.
One of my personal favourite things about the show is that the writers always seem to be trying to push the envelope in terms of dialogue and cool action. It's certainly not your typical science fiction show, and it's never boring!
