The Last of Us (2023)
Fool me twice...
Lacks building suspense. Lots of tense moments and scenes that peak and trough, peak and trough. Few of the characters, though, make their motivations felt rather than simply voiced, so the story doesn't feel as though it progresses as a whole.
On first attempt, made it three quarters of the way through Episode 1 before giving up. Then foolishly tried again after reading so many positive reviews.
On second attempt, made it to half way through Episode 4 before giving up after realizing that I still didn't care whether the characters made it to their intended destination.
Zombie video games tend to lack a story ark, so perhaps its lack here is to be expected.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Ultiamately, boring
Despite critic quotes like "frenetic energy," "brilliantly exhausting," and "exhilarating," the attempt to maintain unbroken tension throughout with little buildup grew boring. We stopped watching halfway through.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
Bad and long
Uneven plot that shifts from entirely predictable scenes to unexplained big scenes and plot twists. Many strange awkward pauses. I ended up jumping through scenes to get it over with.
Darkest Hour (2017)
Much better than IMDB's current 7.3 rating
Very well-paced and impressively acted. Remarkable attention to detail in set design, with the coal smoke-stained stone of London then, including a darkened Buckingham Palace. Not a movie to overlook.
Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic (2005)
Funniest stand-up show ever
This is the funniest stand-up movie I've seen, and I don't make it through most of them. It's far better than its 6.5 IMDb rating. Some viewers who were offended gave low ratings. What did they expect? If you don't like edgy, possibly offensive, humor watch something tame like a romcom or sitcom.
The Comeback (2005)
Better than Seinfeld
The ironic humor in this show is hysterical. I love Seinfeld, but this is even better, exceeded only by Curb Your Enthusiasm, with at least as many out loud laughs as Peter Dragon's Action series.
Lisa Kudrow does an amazing job as both writer and actor, with a large cast, each doing great work. Robert Michael Morris is especially funny at doing nothing.
I stumbled across season 1 googling Lisa Kudrow as a big fan of Web Therapy's online episodes at lstudio. Psyched to find on IMDb that there's a season 2 with just two episodes left to watch on season 1. One show like this makes it worth paying for HBO Now.
