Sortie 67 (2010)
Brutal, honest. (small spoiler)
First off, in the quebec scene, this type of gangster or street gang movie is pretty rare indeed. Not that i usually gravitate towards these movies usually, but since it is local, and the director himself told me about his movie i decided to give it a shot.
To start off, altought this movie ain't perfect, and yes it has it flaws, there was some good points.
First off i take off my hat in respect for the Director Bastien Jephté for making an Urbain quebec movie. Altought this is not my kind of movie usually, there is a audience for this kind of movie. And i appreciate that Director Bastien Jephté brought a movie like this for them.
For the acting, I'm shared. There are some strong performances, and some weaker. For the main part, the main casting is pretty good and convincing. Bringing some well appreciated multidimensional characters into the movie. But i must admit, some of the supporting cast is somewhat weaker. For the strong part, the best example would be the father and son reunion. Pretty gripping and well done. Also Benz Antoine's performance was well executed. For the downers, is the acting from the foster mother in the beginning of the movie. It felt somewhat forced, and also abit lost in translation with the editing style. This problem sometimes re ocurres throughout the movie. But it is often overshadowed with the stronger performances of the main actors.
For the visual style, it has nice moments, especially in the more slower and dramatic sequences. Bastien Jephté found a nice balance in those type of scenes to establish enough drama and sense of urgency. But in some other scenes, i would of preferred of less slow motions, or stylized style. But that is just a personal taste. Some will appreciate those moments. But in my case it just slows down the story without adding much to it.
Overall, if you like Urbain/gangster movies, or curious about the urban life of kids in Montreal, you should check this. I probably would of never picked up this movie is i would not of meet Bastien Jephté, but i am glad i did.
The Event (2010)
Has all the good stuff but...
The event starts big, and continues big, but with past experience with other shows that i shall not name, will it get confused and lost in its own formula.
The story so far is pretty good without pushing too much info in a somewhat good pace. But I'm already seeing a trend in the show. And thats the hole who to trust who not to trust storyline. It would be OK, if it was abit more expended and put more storyline into it, and not show it in the first couple of episodes. It really dulls down the suspense for me.
The acting is what keeps this show alive. Top notch for all the main characters, and aside for a couple of sides, it well balances itself.
It has great potential, lets just hope it wont wind down into plots without answers and over complicated story lines.
All in all, this show so far deserves an 8 out of 10
Steven Seagal: Lawman (2009)
Wow, I was surprised
I was watching the biography channel late at night and they where showing a full hour of Steven's bio. And i must say i am not really a big fan of his work. During his bio showing, they showed small clips of a show he has done,LawMan. Now I must say, i was intrigued. I got around on watching the show the next day, and i must say, he makes a better cop then actor.
The show really sucks you in after 4 episodes. At first i sort of found it had a much slower pace then other reality cop shows out there. And honestly, the more i watched more i realised that is a good thing. We get to see much more of a human side of a cop's day at work. And most important, we get to see past Steven's tuff man persona.
The is a nice mix of humour, drama and even suspense. Without going into details there's even one scene you really hope Steven gets a hold of the criminal and gives them what the seriously deserve.
I am not surprised that it only went for one season, but in my opinion it is one season strong. I strongly recommend.
