Secret Celebrity Renovation: JB Smoove (2023)
The Only Episode You Need to See
We're big JB Smoove fans and this episode only elevated him further in our eyes.
The task turned into a massive reno of his deceased grandmother's home.
JB was full-hands-on, devoted to making the home safe and livable for his auntie, while keeping grandma's memory alive in every room.
The results were spectacular! Beyond what one could possibly anticipate.
Absolutely the best episode of any "reno" show - especially "celeb reno" - we've seen (and that's a long list). It was so sincere and never felt "staged."
So many emotions from reminiscing of decades past, letting go of what was, embracing what is, preserving memories, and setting the stage for many more to come.
From Scratch (2022)
Profound on many levels
First of all, stellar acting by every single actor. Totally in love with Filomena (Lucia Sardo) now.
Lessons learned about love and communication - even when there are culture and language differences among people. When you see (and FEEL) your child in love, happy and cared for - without judgment, or looking for negatives - because it's so pure.
The heartbreak is palpable. The story resonant in that even in the most beautiful there is sadness, pain and heartbreak. But never from anger or human failing. Just "life itself."
It would be great if they were able to continue the story but overall, likely better to leave it where it is.
(Also about time there was an Italian movie that had a Zucchero song in it - he's one of our absolute faves.)
Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman (2004)
Infuriating... Until it Improves. Somewhat.
Nathan doesn't get a pass, yet this overall gives him one.
Rose continually lambasts herself and her "misses" in the relationship but he does little introspection at all.
We have to stop allowing cheaters an "out." Or say that they were naively driven into another person's bed without their implicit say-so and cooperation.
Especially an affair that lasts a year.
This is a movie bound to give anyone with trust issues reason to be convinced their distrust is warranted.
Can't trust your friends, can't trust your husband, yet still somewhat yearning for another disappointing love far more wistfully than he deserves.
Rose couldn't have been more classy but today's woman wouldn't have. And, in my opinion, she shouldn't be. No one gets to blow up your life because they can't keep it in their pants.
Full stop.
Domina (2021)
So many "effs" that I nearly dropped it in the first 5 minutes
I get modernizing ancient history for mass consumption but simple research would show the writers and production staff that the "f-word" is untraceable before the 1200s AD.
There are so many more believable words they could have used to express disgust and frustration that are legitimate for that period. This simple error is a turnoff when you're hoping to transport yourself to that time period.
(And no, I'm not a prude. I can outdo the whole series with "f's" in an hour. But this is a nasty flaw and rather embarrassing.)
For the People: This Is America (2019)
Poignant & Timely
Anna Deavere Smith always brings so much to any role she plays
Would love to have access to the song "America" as performed by Komoller. We immediately Googled it but can't find it anywhere!
Unfortunate that several people "reviewing" the episode are unaware of its relevance at this point in time. Maybe THEY live in a bubble. It wasn't particularly a "left leaning episode." It portrayed exactly what many non-white persons who contribute to American society are experiencing because they may not be citizens. (Truth be told, there are many white people here illegally and they are never subjected to the cruelty POC have been experiencing.)
The episode sparked a healthy conversation in our household because my daughter, a nurse, said she fears an ICE intrusion since some of her patients may not be citizens. (She doesn't ask. It isn't her job to question them.) The only thing worse than being invaded upon by heartlessness is to be apprehended by emissaries of America's Third Reich when you're ill.
