No Way to Live (2016)
A lurid tale of lust, murder, and greed.
No Way To Live is a rare find. It's a Noir in the tradition of the the genre's literary innovators -- that in turn shaped the genre's golden age in film. Few modern thrillers take notes from these masters. There are obvious shades of James Cain's "Postman Always Rings Twice", Jim Thompson's "Hell of a Woman", and even Robert Edmond Alter's "Swamp Sister".
The film will keep you in relentless suspense, trying to guess the next move, as twists and turns abound (but, importantly, it never neglects having a healthy sense of humor). And Freya Tingley delivers a knockout performance as Nora Thompson. A major star-turn.
I watched this at a festival, and looking forward to listen to the commentary on the Blu-Ray release. Highly recommend!
Stomp! Shout! Scream! (2005)
The Best Thing That happened to Beach-Monster movies since 1965!
One of the only genre feature films I've seen recently that pay a respectful homage to the original films and still take themselves seriously without indulging in their camp-value - which usually creates the exact opposite of what they attempt, there is nothing worse than "camp" that's not entertaining. But again, this is not the case. "Stomp! Shout! Scream!" is funny, looks great and features excellent actors (a very lovely Claire Bronson in particular). Great original songs by Catfight! and excellent selections from various modern Garage bands including The Woggles, who are amongst the scene's best. For fans of the original 60's films, this is a must.
