Mirai nikki (2011)
OK, you got me. It was all worth the blood, boobs and tears
I have seen stories with similar twists before so I manged to guess what was happening fairly early but to be honest as it went on from there it made me doubt my predictions. This is a good time travel story line that you will not guess if you do not watch a few time travel related story lines. At times shocking and suspenseful with a great twist. Tactical and manipulative with murder and death almost always in the cards the lack of direct combat magic doesn't dull the action.
My main warning is that this show is not child friendly, the first few episodes may let you off with a warning but the main characters personal development is a boys coming of age story meaning it will all be about growing a pair and using them in a physical and metaphorical sense. It's pretty violent and, because of the characters age, if this movie was live action, you could be arrested for watching and distributing it (forgive the euphemism but if you don't get it your too innocent for this).
Stop reading if you do not like spoilers because the next part is full of a few veiled ones but nothing too specific.
To summarize the plot the universe is destroyed so a 14 year old can get laid and I'm going to call statutory on it because he was not ready for that. The kid was scared of boobs (there are allot of them in this), there was a weird Stockholm syndrome thing going on and everyone was dead.... But any way the poor kid unfortunately suffers of a bad case of reluctant hero ( he cries so much) and protagonist allure in a universe that is kind of rapey (I kid you not at one point some on asks if he'd like to be raped before he dies). From this hedonistic world his only real shield in this fairly adult world is his snow queen style baby face powers, in the words of Hans Christian Anderson "I can give (him) no greater power" because just like in the snow queen, puppy dog eyes get you out of allot of jams. Not to spoil things but I will tell puppies grow up especially when they being trained to be hunting dogs and there will be allot of comments about his balls. Sounds gay I know and it almost was but I swear no gay sex scenes. To put your mind at ease, it only ever actually shows one sausage, I think there might have been more in the baby photos some where but I wasn't on really looking for it. Other than the almost homosexuality, this show has allot of similarities with Madoka Magicka but it is much less surreal and of course has some sausages.
Fairy Tail (2009)
Some where between Naruto and Pokemon
It's a great show but if your into something serious it is not the place to look. The show has allot of elements you will be familiar with characters have techniques like characters in Naruto, it also has discussions about peoples techniques also like Naruto and people scream out their moves as they do it and get their own back ground when they attack like Pokemon. The whole thing feels a bit like a video game characters have levels and elemental types. But none of that is really important. Overall it has a pretty childish feel some where between Naruto and Pokemon. Personally I think many of the more childish things make combat seems less important to with some exceptions for some characters fighting styles.
The show is split into separate quests and it seems like every one of the main characters gets a full long quest to themselves, while others get side quests. There is a little bit of mystery but it's not very noticeable, it is to do with things that most stories never explain any way. The main characters are all memorable and in some ways funny and like I've already mentioned, they all have their own stories. There's not really much of a huge over arching story which is fine because everything remains very consistent through out even if lunar island had nothing to do with R-system, the effects on characters persist. Except with Natsu and Gray, they are meat heads and I saw no change in that through out all of what was available on net flicks.
In summary endure through the kiddy way the show looks because the characters are all worth knowing. The show is family friendly but some of the stories will have appeal to all people.
Ao no ekusoshisuto (2011)
Emotions are for chumps, Demons speak with hellfire.... and hugs
The first two episodes are pretty good and quite intense. It was the kind of thing I would expect to scar people for a long time, if it happened to them. However the main character, Rin, doesn't seem to phased by it and neither should you, because it doesn't remain that intense. Allot of the time it is quite light hearted and hugs solve allot of problems.
Generally the series is very short and as such all of the character's emotional turmoil is dealt with pretty quickly. In fact the main characters main emotions are righteous anger and puppy mode, which you might not realize you will love but you probably will. This doesn't mean there aren't any emotions, just don't expect characters to be discussing their feelings that much. The main struggles characters face are to do with friendship, how they deal with their past and finally understanding others. A good portion of the show is like a high school drama, all about making friends, passing tests and keeping secrets.
The end of the show really speeds up, this is because the anime overtook the manga and rushed to the end. It is not as bad as other endings that are like that but there are some things that are skipped and don't seem to the same. For example I feel weird saying Satan is not such a bad guy.
The demons are appropriately horrifying, excluding ones you are supposed to like. They look like they are part monkey and wag their tales like puppies. If you are watching subtitles hope they aren't in yellow like mine were because allot of the floors are yellowy. The English dub is fine except for the first two episodes where the voice acting is just less intense than what's going on.
In summary I liked it, I liked the characters, they were all pretty bad arse but still lovable. The premise and events were interesting and I thought about them a bit, but I was left thinking some things should have been explored more. Some things were a little freaky but there was plenty of cuteness too.
