Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)
A heart-wrenching story, not for everyone!
I have never been a karan johar movie fan and have despised all of his movies for being childish. But adhm is by far his best work. Moving on from simple, one dimensional themes like 'friendship is love ', Karan has for the first tried to show something so intricate yet so real. It's not like his earlier 'la la land ' movies filled with cheesy lines and song and dance and happy endings. The movie depicts complex, multi-faceted, difficult love just like how it is in real life. The presentation however does seem a bit unrealistic sometimes. Like how people who are living abroad since over 2 decades, speak such fluent Hindi/urdu and are ready to crack shayris every 2 minutes. How everyone is so rich and the only worry in their life is their love life. The most real thing in the movie is the chemistry between ayan and alizeh. Ranbir and anushka are superb in the movie, especially anushka who has given an impeccable performance. Aishwarya is alright and a bit boring sometimes. Fawad doesn't have that long a role to be taken much notice of. The music is outstanding and songs melodious. Overall, it's a good watch but it's not for everyone.
The Martian (2015)
Don't expect too much from this one!
For me, a major turn off with this movie was that it was not realistic as I thought it would be. Yes, the story was new, the concept was new. But it is a bit far-fetched to show that NASA would spend a billion of dollars on a mission to rescue one astronaut. And that the people already on the mission would take the risk of changing their course to rescue someone. It is a bit too optimistic to show that you get potatoes harvested in Mars soil (in earth-like conditions created) at the first go. I mean you could be a really great botanist, but cultivating and growing crops is not just temperature and water, what about so many organisms that take part in the process!Succeeding at first go is a bit optimistic according to me. But then again it's a movie and is based on a science fiction book.
Apart from that, I think the direction is great. The cinematography is good and the visual effects are good. The performances are good especially Matt Damon. Overall, it's good, nothing too special about it.
Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
Must watch with entire family!
Initially, I was hesitant to watch this movie as this movie did not do that well commercially(compared to other Zoya Akhtar movies). However,I must say I was very impressed with the way the movie was put together and executed.
DDD is a must watch for everybody regardless of what social status or financial category a person belongs to. Agreed, the drama takes place in a 'rich' people setting. But the family problems depicted in the movie are common across all classes in the country. So although it feels like they are rich people problems, they are actually not.
The performance of all the actors is superb especially Anil Kapoor and Shefali. The portrayal of Anil Kapoor as a shrewd, stubborn businessman is very genuine and so is Shefali's struggle to cope with unhappiness in marriage and maintaining social status. It is refreshing to watch Ranveer Singh doing something different than playing the usual macho/rowdy roles. Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma are good as usual.
Overall the film is extremely pleasant to watch with no unwanted melodrama or item songs. It is a very sensible approach to depicting problems within a family that are often not spoken about but need to be discussed. And I must say Zoya handled it pretty well!
