The Wicker Man (2006)
Best example of an anti-feminist film I've seen in a while
The best part about this film is that it was made in 2006 so its misogyny has all sorts of nuances. If toxic masculinity were put on trial, this film would be key evidence of its pervasiveness in popular culture. Its tagline is "This is what happen when women are in charge." The men are, in Nicholas Cage's own words, "second class citizens." I'm pretty sure they've all had their tongues cut out. The men are kept around solely for breeding and heavy lifting while the women are given all the important responsibilities like governing, farming, doctoring, etc. All in all, I was laughing the entire time. This film is unintentionally hilarious and is worth a watch with the right mindset. Seven stars because I was truly entertained and I feel like a Cinema or gender studies student could write her entire thesis on this film.
Mara (2018)
Uncommon Idea, but plot holes and cliche's ruin it a bit
As someone who watches almost exclusively horror films for entertainment, I can say that I've definitely seen worse. It holds suspense throughout and plays on the idea of sleep paralysis rather than just sticking to the whole demon plot line. However, there are several inconsistencies in "Mara's" behavior and the way she creeps up on Kate differs from the way she treats her other victims. For example, Kate falls asleep during stage three but doesn't begin to see Mara while awake until she dozes while on the ferry. Secondly, Dougie says she has to sleep for 20 minutes in order for Mara to appear but when she dozes in the tub. She was definitely not asleep for the twenty minutes needed to fall in to a deep sleep as dougie describes. This also leaves the Ferry micronap in a strange category despite Mara's immediate appearance following it. Another side note is that if a detective were investigating a crime and one of the family members blamed a drug dealer, they would definitely follow that up. It's quite a stretch that Kate would have to do all of that detective work by herself. Finally the cliche of Sophie forgiving Kate but Sophie's mother remaining blame... I though it was the person's guilt, not the person's inability to reconcile with the person they've wronged. All in all, decent script, decent acting but they obviously lacked a person to look over continuity.
All Light Will End (2018)
Good concept, poor execution
Being an indie horror film I wasn't expecting phenomenal performances. However, as someone said earlier I did expect a good script. There are so many ways the director could have gone with the idea of the mother torturing her daughter for the benefit of a book. The direction they chose not only gave me whiplash with plot twist after plot twist, it also made me loose interest all together. They spend the entire movie building the characters of samantha, her friends, and her dad and his deputies. Then out of nowhere the mother is supposed to be a horrible person but the only two scenes we really see her character are when she's comforting her traumatized daughter and then when she is inexplicably putting her daughter down about her writing abilities. Then samantha kills her mother and steals the book that her dad has supposedly already dropped off at the publisher. We have to assume that he's in league with her because he obviously knows his wife was writing a book about traumatizing their daughter. So did he help her steal the book? Are we meant to infer that he knows his daughter is criminally insane and was her co-conspirator in the murder of the mom? Is that why he is somehow going to get his daughter off the hook for the murder of three people? Too vague and too many concept switches at the very end. I'm fine with a slow burn, I'm fine with low budget, I'm fine with mediocre acting skills. What I'm not fine is watching someone butcher what could have been a compelling concept. Better luck next time...
