I'll Be Gone in the Dark (2020)
An Ode to Internet True Crime Bloggers
This is not about the Golden State killer or serial killers. This is a love letter to the True Crime hipster internet movement. It is an ode to an author. I felt it was very boring and I lost interest fast. If you are one of the few true crime addicts who spent a lot of time on the internet using basic tools to feel like a detective, then I think you would like this. If you are a normal person, who wanted to hear about an actual case, then this will leave you very disappointed.
Malcolm X (1992)
Great Movie About a Hero & Amazing Human
This movie was one of Spike Lee's best. I am not a big Spike Lee fan but this movie was able to really showcase the greatness of Malcolm X.
Malcolm X is a hero not only to blacks but all people of color. He found enlightenment after years of doing wrong. Unfortunately, he went with a crooked organization in the Nation of Islam. However, through them he discovered the truth and later broke free from their clutches to see the true light.
Whites of European descent have long wanted to control the narrative. Films have been a big way for their to push their version of America into popular culture. It is always great to see movies that start to showcase the real America.
The issue with racism that engulfs American society is a white European problem. It is not a problem created by people of color. As America evolves into a country with a majority of people of color by 2041, whites will have to own up and fix their issues. How they do this is up to them and will determine how their future in America will be.
The negative reviews on here are mainly those who want everything to be "all inclusive." The same people who push out an "All Lives Matter" narrative to take steam away from a real movement with real merit.
These people tend to live in bubbles and want to push myths and lies to the masses. Their purpose to hijack important messages to play in their favor.
This movie showcases the importance for people of color to unite. The importance of orators with profound messages to speak to the masses. The importance of not relying on white European allies and instead the importance of bringing people of color together.
The one part I wish they spent more time on, is Malcolm's realization that all people of color are connected. No matter if one is African, Asian, Hispanic, or Native, they all share a common reality. Once people of color in America unite, there is no hope for injustice and inequality that has been pushed to these people for centuries.
A great movie and message. 10/10.
Breaking the Bee (2018)
An Amazing American Tale
Americans of Indian descent have come to the USA in greater numbers since the 1960's. Prior to that, there was the Asian Exclusion Act which barred immigration from Asia. However, Americans of Indian descent have a long history in America. The first recorded newspaper clipping of an Indian (from India) in America, was just 10 years after the pilgrims landed on Playmouth Rock. The Indians were brought over as indentured servants to the British. They eventually were swapped for Africans. The Indians from that time assimilated into the African slave population. Indian Americans next came in larger numbers during the transcontinental railroad. They helped build the railroad with other Asians. Then came the racist court decisions like US v. Bhagat Singh which stripped Indians of citizenship and took away their land rights. It was doubly cruel because Bhagat Singh (like a number of other Indians) fought for the USA in World War I.
I say all this to point out that Americans of Indian descent are part of this country's history. Heck, this land was found by Europeans searching for a quicker path to India and they thought the Natives were Indian.
Indian Americans are an extremely intelligent ethnic group in America. Their children greatly outsmart all other American children. This documentary shows the hard work and dedication these kids have. It is uplifting and a great way to show the amazing talent of Americans of Indian descent.
McMillions (2020)
Good Premise but Drags Too Long
I always love true crime documentaries. This one dragged on way too long. On top of that, they had so many different people and did not do a good job connecting the dots. I had to go back a few times to just remember who was who and why whatever was happening. It drags on so much. It is also extremely one-sided and pro-FBI. Its an alright watch if you are bored.
Messiah (2020)
Amazing and I want more
This was an amazing show. I looked on Rotten Tomatoes and saw low scores from critics. Critics are worthless. Go watch this and open your mind. I hope for a season 2.
We Are Columbine (2018)
Decent documentary on trauma but falls flat
Although this documentary showed another side of the Columbine shooting, it lacked a narrative that kept the viewer engaged. First, the students chosen lacked diversity. They were mainly all from the same year, with 2 teachers thrown in and pretty much all one color. They all had the same type of viewpoint. This could have been done in 30 minutes. It was very anti-media but did not address any lessons learned. Overall, I could only watch 45 mins of this and turned it off because it was repetitive.
Master of None (2015)
The People Who Give This Negative Reviews, Don't Get It
If you read these IMDB reviews, you will encounter a bunch of people thinking this show is supposed to be a comedy like Parks. They have no sense of reality. This is Aziz's take on romance in the modern age. I read tons of reviews complaining about "PC" culture etc. First, America will be 51% non-white by 2043. Second, the current landscape of Hollywood is not reality. Whites of European descent have had their fill of Hollywood. Thus, when they see a brown American come into his own, they get really shook. America was never your country. By definition this country was built off immigrants, and the people who did the labor to build this land were people of color.
Aziz does a great job capturing life as a real American. The one's who hate this want 7-11 jokes or stereotypical humor invented by Europeans who have no sense in reality. Americans of Indian descent are the richest ethnic group in the USA and not even by a close margin. This showcases a take on this very American tale.
Skip the negative reviews by the whiners who cry about everything. Don't expect a fall on your face comedy. Expect reality and a real story and you will like this show just fine.
The Unlisted (2019)
Surprised at how good show was -- Don't pay attention to the bad reviews
I am an American and usually find Australian shows utterly boring or just knock offs of American shows. This actually was pretty good. I like the casting and it was fun. This is a kids/teen type show.
Australians are known to be the most racist of any nationality (it's funny because the only real Aussies are brown). Thus, you will see tons of low reviews who feel their "Australian" culture is being browned out LOL. If you want your culture, go back to England.
Another Life (2019)
You never buy into any of the characters
I feel for a show to work, there needs to be something about the actors / characters you relate to or like. Unfortunately, from the start, this show makes each and every character really unlikable. It's a combination of social media cliches, and pop culture type stereotypes that make each and every character not likable. I felt no buy in, I had no feelings for each actor. The plot is OK but done many times over. Overall, I just could not get into this show.
Living the Dream (2017)
Just Bad
This show is just not good. The acting, the premise, the stereotypes, it is just, well, not good. The British inferiority complex to America is shown vividly in this episode, as the Brits try to take every possible jab to America they can, but much of it is wildly inaccurate or just honestly delusional / unbelievable.
Skip it.
