Black Summer (2019)
Strong Start Becomes Worst of Its Genre
Quite possibly the worst show that I have ever watched. Definitely the worst zombie show that I've seen. It started out good but went downhill immediately after the episode where they are stranded in the diner in season one.
They killed the only two characters that I cared about. One ar the end of season one and the other in the first episode of season two. The korean actress is very annoying with her overacting and overdramatic movements and reactions.
There are so many bad choices in this show from the writing to the plot to just the way scenes were shot. After the diner episode the show just picks up with no explanation of what is going on as if two or three episodes were pulled from the final cut. There are whole episodes of people just running around chaoticly shooting everything.
There is no rhyme of reason for anything. Characters are developed and then killed off midway through their arc. People are introduced to the story then just forgotten just as quickly.
Honestly this whole thing is like someone with no writing or directing experience with ADHD high on pot wrote a really dumb B movie script and decided to turn it into a series at the last moment. Horrible. Your time is worth way more than this garbage.
Dope (2017)
Could Have Been Good
A decent documentary that is ruined by a horrible music selection that serves no purpose than to glorify the criminal behavior behind drug trafficking and dealing. Even the narrator's voice inflections suggest that drugs and violence are to be given respect.
The footage and access to the otherwise hidden world of the underbelly of the drug world was of good quality and the major saving grace of the show. However just about every chance the writers/directors had to progress the individuals lives within this documentary were missed.
None of the people in this documentary were explored for any reason other than as a prop in a really shallow scene either involving drug trafficking or abuse.
Observe and Report (2009)
Bad Script and Mediocre Acting
Like the above says. A subpar script with uninspired acting interrupted frequently by out of proportionly loud bouts of music. I love Seth Rogen, but this movie is a turd. I can't believe it even made it to the theatres.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
I Enjoyed the Creatures
I do not know where all of these other cynical, angry reviews are coming from. Sure they showed the 'goblins' in abundance, but this isn't your typical jump-scare movie; which is fine by me. This was more of a fantasy-horror film where you are supposed to be as much enthralled by the creatures as you are 'afraid' of them.
I thoroughly enjoyed how the creatures looked, moved, and acted. It reminded me of a more modern-made version of the little imps from the movie "The Gate." Instead of dreading them and being on the edge of my seat, I was waiting to see them and their antics again. Perhaps that's why the other reviewers are angry. Perhaps this film has been mis-marketed.
If you like creepy little bipedal monsters that look like imps/goblins, then this movie is for you. If you like fantasy monsters and played Dungeons and Dragons as a kid then you will enjoy this film. If you enjoy medieval European folklore and cryptozoology then you will be as entertained as I was.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
One Less Pretentious Review
Movies are meant to entertain, not be some sort of genius string theory. I grow so tired of these one star review by pretentious people using the thesaurus for every word greater than 4 characters in length. Characters in movies make dumb decisions. Unrealistic things happen. That's Hollywood and that's movies. If you want real life, go to work or school or do some housework for a dose of realism and sense.
The negative reviews on this movie cite some of the most asinine reasons for their ratings. Most people said the movie was too predictable. This movie wasn't supposed to be some sort of mystery thriller. The writers weren't even trying to hide the things that reviewers pointed out as too obvious. In fact most of the things complained about were exposed as dead giveaways in the movie....not intended to be hidden at all. Try enjoying yourself at the theater instead of judging every scene cynically.
I heard a lot of sniveling about the CGI effects as well. Yes, the movie was very CGI intensive. It was also in wonderfully high definition, vibrantly colored, and had a crispness and refreshing, beautiful feel to it. There were maybe two parts where I felt that the CGI could have been improved upon. The rest of the 95% of the CGI was not only acceptable; but I found it pretty impressive and quite disturbing in many scenes.
All in all this was a really great movie. Both the wife and I really enjoyed it. We really enjoyed Prometheus as well though, so if you didn't like that movie you may not like this one. If you like action, aliens, technology, sci-fi, space travel then you will probably like this movie. If you are a pretentious internet snob who haughtily uses the thesaurus while spitefully describing the world around you, then you will probably find plenty to do here.
Why Him? (2016)
Decent for an At-Home Viewing
Let's get real here. Most of these reviews with abysmal scores were probably written by people who should have never gone to see the movie in the first place. Half of the reviews have scathing remarks for the actors. Why on earth would you go to see a movie that starred actors that you didn't like. That says more about their intelligence than the merits of this movie.
Secondly, I do not understand these people blasting the movie for being to sick or depraved, or full of vulgarity. This movie was more or less in line with the target audience's acceptable level of debauchery. There was nothing over the top in the movie that I saw and I owe the negative comments towards this end to uptight people going to see a movie that maybe the marketing department misdirected their advertising towards. I can't believe people are going hysterical over potty humor when they go and watch movies with torture scenes, killings and other violence. Get over yourselves.
With my foreword aside, the movie wasn't great, but it wasn't a total disappointment either. The actors played their parts well. The script may have been regurgitated and the humor struggling at times, but overall I found the movie just what I was looking for; lighthearted humor. I never laughed out loud, but I found myself smiling pretty often and that is good enough for me.
In closing, I watched this movie at home. I didn't pay to go see it in a movie theater. While I probably would not have paid to see this on a big screen in retrospect, it was a decent movie for a night at home with the wife or with friends.
ps - I found the actor playing the daughter annoying. Her voice was irritating and the script for her part made her whiny.
Afghanistan: The Great Game (2012)
Afghani Propaganda
It's painfully evident that the narrator has some sort of overzealous admiration for Afghanistan. Every chance to shore up Afghanistan's 'reputation' is taken, while facts that diminish the country are omitted or altogether manipulated.
He goes to say that every nation that has gone there has been 'humiliated and defeated' and that they are 'unable to get back out.' I am sorry sir, but America entered Afghanistan for two reasons, to topple the Taliban and to kill Osama Bin Laden. Both of those were achieved and we got out afterwards to boot.
The documentary has some decent history facts. However, the comments made by all of those interviewed are appallingly political in nature. No attempt is even made to hide the pro-liberal slander. It really hurts the integrity of the documentary and completely drives away a conservative audience
