Cunk on Earth (2022)
I haven't laughed out loud so much in years
Cunk on Earth is a brilliant and brilliantly made mockumentary. It's not so much a spoof of history documentaries and stuffy talking head historians as it is marvelous send up of today's younger generations, self absorbed, ego-centrintric, and completely clueless that anything important happened before their birth.
The deadpan delivery of the woefully undereducated and misinformed Cunk is a masterclass in British comedy. The interviewees, who are in on the joke but directed to respond seriously, are often dumbstruck by the absurdity of Cunk's questions. I so wish I could show this in (American) college Humanities courses but I fear the humor would be completely lost on them.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Blech!!
I like bad sci-Fi/apocalyptic dystopian movies. Greenland and Geostorm for example. But this is ,simply put, is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I wanted to stop watching but like a train wreck I couldn't look away. The best part of finishing this viewing is that I know I'll never have to watch it again.
Poorly written and poorly acted.
The convoluted timelines of these films aside this is just pure cinematic garbage.
There is one good line "and I have a good sense of humor" but all the rest is trite, melodramatic and predictable. The "She's John" moment falls as laughably flat as the common maternal name Martha in Superman vs Batman.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
I still have never met a Michael Bay film I liked
This movie suffers from what most Michael Bay movies suffer, horrific writing and an overly enthusiastic cinematic-centric director. I'm all for a good shot but these are always over-directed and frequently disconnected from the overall story telling. As always, each shot and sequence emphasizes the Wow factor and sacrifices storytelling.
Mrs. America (2020)
Outstanding
This is a great exploration of the early seventies and the struggles of the feminist movement, in all its facets. Great acting and a killer soundtrack.
Hollywood (2020)
Too easy
There are some very fine performances by great actors. I realize it's fantasy, once upon a time, but it's just too easy; the immediate eradication of racism and on the way to the removal of homophobia?
And the plot was filled with predictable moments.
MegaFault (2009)
Horrible
I haven't even finished this one and I'm not sure I can. Let alone the bad earthquake science, a helicopter flight from Louisville KY to Kansas? C'mon!
End of the World (2018)
Catastrophic
These formulaic disaster movies are fun to watch. Don't take it too seriously and enjoy. There is plenty to criticize, but, hey, these people are working and that's great!
500 MPH Storm (2013)
Just awful
The sfx looked like someone just discovered photoshop. The writing is atrocious.
Asteroid vs Earth (2014)
A laugh riot
This is bad writing, directing, low budget Sci-fi movie making at its worst (or is it best). Some really great laughs though. I may have to watch it again. You need a pencil and paper to take notes to keep up with the plot twists. Props though for the non-traditional tertiary love story.
Fall of Hyperion (2008)
Absolutely awful
Very poor writing based on what must be zero research. Some classically bad acting.
The Philadelphia Experiment (2012)
Wow
Now that I see it's a SyFy movie I kinda get it. This was unbelievably bad, but like the train wreck it is, I couldn't stop watching.
What/If (2019)
One out of three ain't bad?
I'll say this first, I very much enjoyed the story involving the gay couple. The Kevin character was great. Give those characters their own movie. Other than that though...Very much felt like I was watching a poor soap opera. Lots of poorly written moments and corny lines. The Dr (Harris and the Archers) plot was completely unnecessary. Lots of contrived moments. Archer's father just happened to be making a telling phone call in the same out of the way spot where his son is?
And did they forget that "the boy" was initially a bar tender?
Com'on Netflix you usually do better than this.
