Jurassic World (2015)
One big intro, visually its great but the story and action aren't delivered
It's one big intro where you see the park and stuff. This feels like it takes at the least 100 minutes of the movie. Then the kids do something stupid at a certain moment, then someone else does something stupid and we end up with a few dinosaurs on the loose. The snowball effect does its thing and they have to survive while gathering each other.
Well this ain't big news for Jurassic Park and I don't mind. But well, it feels like a big intro which doesn't deliver. Almost no action at all, visuals are great! The park is really beautiful but well, it feels like we just walk trough it and in the last minutes there is a bit of action with a few dinosaurs. You won't be on the tip of your seat, you won't be scared or jump up at any moment. No tension at all. A 5 for the visual aspect.
Poker Night (2014)
Great mysterious movie with twists but too flawed story.
Poker Night is a movie which claims to be somewhat like Seven and The usual suspects. He gets away with this claim! But not because of excellence!
Poker Night blends the story and the storytelling of TUS and Seven. It uses the narrative part of TUS, in this case the poker night or flashbacks, and the somewhat sinister ambiance of Seven. It's trying to be one of those mind-twisting thrillers you either hate or love. Combining this with a detective story about abduction and you've got potential. Right? Yes, but the director or the writer had a bit of difficulties to get the story ongoing and made some weird decisions.
The character tells about hindsight, how he would have done different. Sadly he makes several mistakes twice.. This the problem of this movie. The character should be smart but makes stupid mistakes for the sake of the movie. It is like the director made an excuse for himself.
While it gives a worthy swing for movies like Seven and TUS it doesn't deliver the awe and "perfectness" because of the flaws in the story.
The movie is worth to watch. Great story twists, good acting, great camera work. Rating is because of lacking competition in this genre.
True Detective: The Western Book of the Dead (2015)
Lots of drama but no body.
Where S01E01 started vague but intriguing this one lacks the latter and is just "weird". Instead of two main characters this one seems to have more. All characters have problems and those are immediately shown without getting to know them. This will give you a bad feeling about every one of them and want distant yourself of them.
I didn't got intrigued in any of the characters nor am I wanting to now.. This combined with quick story/characters changes which gives you very few information about the story makes it look like some sort of "The Bold and the Beautiful". Lots of drama but no body. Where season one, episode one has its mystery this episode is too vague and the characters do not get to you, not because of acting, but because of hiding too much of the story.
That being said, the last 5 minutes gave a good cliffhanger and is promising.
