Archie (2023)
"DYAN"
Worth watching even though it should have been called "DYAN" and not Archie.
There are some truly phenomenal performances is this. (the writing not so much we will discuss that later) I am actually a big fan of Jason Issacs, who often plays the villain. However, watching this series I felt I was watching Cary Grant not Jason Isaacs. He was so on point. (it's a shame it wasn't more about his character). Harriet Walter, who plays his mother is, as always, amazing. She is just so great in everything. Laura Aikman nails Dyan, I remember seeing Dyan Cannon on talk shows when I was young and I felt like I was watching the woman from my childhood. Lastly, The young actors who play the main characters young are so great. Kara Tointon gives such a heart felt performance.
The cinematography was done so well. You can feel the time changes throughout the series with not just the set designs but the color palate of the film/video. It feels very 20s,30s,60s and 80s. So for these reasons I think this is really worth watching.
However, the writing is such a burden on these poor actors. I have seen this before when the movie or show is all about the person telling the story and not the main character. I truly expected to see, being this is 4 episodes, a story about Cary Grants life. Not a snippet of a 3 year relationship wit Dyan Cannon. I mean we get it, He was old and she was young. Blah Blah Blah. So much of his life that could have been seen and told and it's not even touched upon. It kind of gives you insight into their relationship. Did she talk to him about his experiences and relationships ? Doesn't seem like she did. Otherwise she would have had more to tell.
So this should have been called Dyan because it's not really about Cary. Don't let that spoil your appreciation for the wonderful jobs these actors did.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
This is a good movie, ignore all the Negative Trolls
First off I am old enough to have seen all these movies in the theater. I remember how the first movie was so remarkable and great. There have been a couple of turkeys over the years.
This is NOT A TURKEY.
The CGI is impeccable,
and the look and references to the 1969 I found amazing. I think Ford plays a beat up old man wonderfully ( not that difficult haha) I think the female lead does a phenomenal job. Her character is believable and enjoyable to watch and she brings a large amount of charm to the character. Like I said I am not a young guy, I remember when woman characters in action movies had to be rescued and were annoying. I really appreciated and enjoyed seeing that change. So many great female action leads of come along and added so much to so many movies. To see other reviewers who comment on this lovely woman's appearance I find to be moronic. She was great, and was a pleasure to watch, the movie was great. These movies are silly entertainment and thats what this provided.
Timeless (2016)
I binged it in 2023, it grows on you.
I really liked this show. With any new show it takes a couple of episodes to get used to the actors and the characters they portray. It almost seems like the actors need a little time to Jell. This show was entertaining right from the start but really grew on me. I like the characters, the episodes were well written and interesting. I actually learned a few things and I am a history buff. (don't want to say what things and spoil the ride for someone else). I really didn't watch serial TV shows while this was on. I read a lot and would watch movies etc. Now I have time and I am sorry I missed this. It captures the story telling of the Original Quantium leap but has updated effects and humor. Watch it on Hulu.
Lucky Hank (2023)
Almost to true to watch, but entertaining.
It seems silly to leave a review based purely on the Pilot. But for some reason, now that I am retired, I spend a lot of time on this site and also watching shows. I can't support the bad review this show received.
It's a good show, well written well acted and the cast is outstanding. The pilot, and I expect the rest of the season, really embraces the difference between generations. Currently, I don't think there has been a greater divide between the 20 somethings and the 50 somethings since the 1960s. Being a 50 something I see it every day. I find I can relate to this show and the main character. I think the other characters are all fully developed. It's just the pilot. This show is very well made and I think will prove to be a very interesting and entertaining show.
Ghosted (2017)
Had so much Potential
The show was cute at the start then they had like a change mid season and brought in a bigger cast to make it more of an ensemble comedy. They added some really talented comedic actors and the show just needed a little time to come into its own. They also change the way the show was shot. It started out shot with regular sit-com style camera work, then went to like a POV type camera shots like the show the office. This really comes out when binge watching. Lastly if you watch on HuLu episode 16 is out of order. Based on content, cast, and story line I think it should have been episode 2. So 15 should have been the last episode.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
So much waisted Potential
If you read the reviews previously to this one they all hit the nail on the head with the issues and problems with this show. Its actually so sad how they missed such a great opportunity here. The effects, sets, and costumes are fantastic. Many of the characters are terrific. However the show is the victim of poor writing and bad directing. The bad directing is evident in the horrible over-acting done by Sonequa Martin-Green. She is always over the top with every emotion she has to express. What is with her whispering every sentence? If she had the correct guidance she would most likely have some extremely noteworthy performances. Not noteworthy, as they are now, for being bad. For an example of her extreme overacting go to season 3, episode 9 about 44 minutes in. The character Michael Burnham
is on her knees speaking with the empress. In what world, is this a valid performance? Its as if she is imitating The Joker from Suicide Squad which is greatly accepted as a horrible performance. Its not needed here. She could have played this way cooler, it makes no sense for the scene. Leonard Nimoy stated that when he first read the line "Fascinating" while taping the original series he did it too emphatically and the director told him to say the line the way a scientist would. Out of this direction a Star Trek lexicon was born. Why do the directors of this show not tell her, "speak your line, stop whispering", "take it down a notch you are over the top". "stop crying".
Jeez this show is a victim of over acting at its worse.
Enterprise (2001)
PREDICTED THE IPHONE
Much like the original series predicted the Cell-Phone. This series showed iPhone or iPad type devices 6 years before their arrival.
