Ad Astra (2019)
Thoughtful sci-fi
Not your crash, bang wallop kind of space movie. Thought-provoking. Enjoyed watching it at The Light in New Brighton.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Deaf-initely appealing
Love the deaf girl angle as my daughter has this impairment. Really great watch too, lots of tension. An interesting take on the horror genre and I welcome the sequel!
Piggy (2012)
This little Piggy went wee wee wee
Superb raw slice of urban banality. Great to see Martin Compton in an obscure little number like this - of course he has recently been in the spotlight as part of the popular BBC series Line of Duty. It's uncompromising but very watchable. Someone here was complaining about the soundtrack. Don't listen it's superb - by Bill Ryder Jones from just down the road here in Wirral.
Don't Worry About Me (2009)
Love letter to Liverpool
Scouser David Morrrisey has done what everyone from the city eventually does - makes a movie there. And why not, it has lots of character and is very photogenic. I especially liked the sequence on my local beach (New Brighton). A gently, quirky little effort, well worth a squint. Hope to see more of Morrisey in a director's role in the future.
Anna Unbound (2015)
A Greek ODDITY
Greece is known for dramatic tragedies, colossal debt and Nana Moussaka. Now we have a little Greco-Scottish story to add to its rich cultural heritage. It's curious to be sure. Anna Georgiadou tips up in Glasgow having met her boyfriend, presumably while he was on a bingey holiday. Almost immediately she secures a job in an office, although we are never really told what it is she actually does. It is an accomplished performance from Miss Georgiadou who suffers from harrowing flashbacks about her time in Greece. The title of the film is touched on in a surrealist way that is never really explained. There are some strange interactions with colleagues but are they involved in her nightmares? I don't know, to be honest. Maybe it has hidden depths and requires a second viewing.
Match Point (2005)
Court in the Act
The vague and vacuous title of my review very much resembles that of the film itself; Match Point. Within the context of this production, what exactly does it mean? So, yes, one of the leading characters was a former tennis pro but that seems about the only reference to the film name. Neither have I read any review or reference to the fact that this is all very bizarre. As for the movie itself, I have never been a fan of Woody Allen but the large part of this film is engrossing with greed, morals and attitude's of the monied classes very much to the fore. Towards the end there is an inexplicable act that doesn't in my opinion justify the angst that has led upto it. However jolly entertaining.
