Beast (2022)
Do the kids EVER shut up?
My God. I usually love movies like this, but the teenage characters never, and I mean NEVER shut the hell up unless they're not onscreen. They were so relentlessly punishing, that I couldn't even make it to the halfway point. I would almost rather be tortured with the sound of screaming, crying infants for 93 minutes than be subjected to those 2 ever again. They ruin the movie.
Now, it isn't exactly great to begin with. As many other reviews have said, the family drama can induce eyerolling so intense, you may give yourself a concussion. That drama coming from, of course, those 2 insufferable teenagers.
You'll root for the lion. So, skip this garbage, because you know the lion won't win anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the annoying kids ends up killing it. What a rotten cherry on top that would be.

Slow Burner With Great Atmosphere, Falls A Bit Short In The Final Seconds
I had somehow missed on on this film until now, but I'm glad I took the time to watch it because it turned out to be pretty good. It's definitely for fans of slow burning horror, so if you're into films such as Hereditary, The Witch, etc, this is certainly worth a watch.
The movie's atmosphere is bleak, dreary, and claustrophobic in my opinion, which is a big plus for me. The buildup of tension is quite good, and writer/director Adam Macdonald was quite successful in leaving a lot to the viewer's imagination without that being an annoyance. Much like the first 2 acts of The Conjuring, you don't see the evil spirit entirely; only glimpses, shadows, or the sound of footsteps that have the character its tormenting so paralyzed with fear, they're afraid to turn around even though they absolutely know something is pacing within a breath of the back of their neck.
One downside to this movie for me was that the two main characters, Leah and her mother (Laurie Holden, who did a great job I thought), both unfortunately suffer from a lack of common sense in many situations. Several had me shaking my head like I did when I watched horror characters make idiotic decisions 20+ years ago that made me yell at my TV. You know, like running up the stairs instead of out the open front door when the slasher is 50 yards behind the screaming character walking at the speed of Michael Myers.
The other main downside for me was the ending. I'm not going to spoil that, but I will say that it was only partially satisfying. To me, it felt incomplete, like just oooone or two more things maybe could have happened in an additional 3-5 minutes that would have wrapped it up. But that's just because of what I was expecting/hoping would occur due to the nature of the antagonist. Your experience may be different.
Well worth a watch.
The Predator (2018)
How low can your expectations go? Try lowering them more on your way in.
Having low expectations helped me with this movie, but if you haven't seen this yet, you may need to lower them further. It's a 5/10, but even that feels like it might be too generous. The violence rules. There are some killer scenes and cool ideas. But they don't save the movie from its own horrendous identity crisis.
1. The kid sucks. His presence seemed to serve only to annoy. And it's corny as corny gets.
2. The attempts at comedy are god awful. I can't stress how not funny the "funny" parts and "jokes" are. Maybe like Michael Bay humor, but more like sloppy drunk Michael Bay humor.
3. A lot of lazy writing. So, so much.
4. Olivia Munn suuuuucks.
5. The actors have zero chemistry between any of them.
6. There's some shoddy CGI for sure.
7. The super predator's "Iron Man suit" you've probably read complaints about is worthy of all of those complaints.
I'd say AVP is honestly better. Not AVP:R though. But that's a low bar. Didn't see that coming.
Keep those expectations low. Like at sea level. Because make no mistake:
Predator 2 and Predators mop the floor with this dumpster fire so badly that I want Shane Black charged with homicide for probably killing the franchise.
It'll probably be a 4/10 by morning.
Update: 30 hours later, I am still mad AF at this colossal disappointment.4/10
