Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
One of the best series of all time after they Thor-Ragnaroked the heck out of it!!!
Okay, so season one was just okay. Season two was fine. Season three started getting better and better halfway through until the finale when they just said "screw it" and dove all into the ridiculousness. From then on, seasons four, five, and six have been absolutely incredible! They took a page out of the Thor: Ragnarok book and stopped taking themselves too seriously. It's a show about time traveling misfits who try to fix history but often end up messing it up. Why would anyone want that to have a serious tone? The people who say the show went downhill are not appreciating the great humor and levity that comes with being silly, NOT in a cringey way at all but in a fun, weird, quirky, hilarious way! This show makes me laugh out loud SO many times. Yet part of what makes it great is that it's not just plain jokes; it has a perfect balance with more heartfelt, sincere moments and really likable, relatable characters who all go through great development arcs. Storylines are always intriguing and not formulaic; they keep me guessing and usually end up surprising me. Most shows lose momentum around season three or four, but maybe because Legends started off kinda meh, it has only kept climbing toward perfection! If you can't take the levity that comes from quick witty humor and ridiculously laughable circumstances, this show isn't for you. But if you love a combination of serious with funny, interesting plot lines with characters you can root for, nothing too dark or depressing but sometimes still makes you cry with raw emotion, and a show that keeps you glued to the TV week after week...you will adore this show. Just get past seasons one and two for the real glory.
The Boys (2019)
People really misinterpreting this show
I find it hilarious that all these "fans" of the show say they loved the first season for being all in-your-face-screw-the-elites and then say they hated the second season because it became all "woke" and "political" all of a sudden. Um, the first season was just as political as the second!!! It is practically shouting in your face throughout that the rising power of corporations due to unchecked "free market" policies and greed is ruining our society, stomping on the average person and creating a huge wealth gap where the rich keep getting richer. You just didn't see deep enough to recognize it. The first season is CLEARLY anti-capitalism, anti-misogynistic men, anti-military, anti-religious (especially Christian) power, hypocrisy of the people we look up to, privilege of white men to get whatever they want, manipulating the media, etc. That is all stuff those complainers would characterize as "liberal wokeness." The show didn't change from season one to season two. The only difference I can see is that they added a theme of white supremacy, which goes along with capitalism and all that other stuff anyway, so the people complaining here are really just complaining about a show discussing real racial issues that are prevalent in our society because it makes them uncomfortable to have to recognize. The fact that reviewers are mad about a show telling them white supremacy is bad is VERY telling about these reviewers. That being said, if you think about it, all the bad guy superheroes, even in the first season, are white, while the "Boys" are more diverse, so it was hinting at white supremacy all along. Anyway, this is clearly an anti-capitalism, anti-corruption, and anti-everything-unjust-about-this-world show. Take it or leave it, but don't kid yourselves. It has always been this way and will continue to be. If you're offended, good. I believe that was the intention all along. One more thing: it is incredibly hypocritical to be against the "elites" in power and also support free market capitalist, multi-conglomerate corporatism. Capitalism is the root cause of inequality and some people having all the power and money while most have very little. This show has been trying to teach you that from day one, but you clearly choose to ignore the truth.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2015)
If you're not a bigot, you'll love this!
Notice how every single negative review is about how Stephen criticizes Trump. Maybe that's because Trump is the biggest joke ever? He's not lampooning Trump in order to be "hateful" (Stephen is one of the nicest people ever-the way he treats his guests, his audience, is all proof). Rather, he's pointing out the wrong things Trump does to the public in order to hold Trump accountable. He would do that with any other President as well. If you don't like it, why are you wasting your time here? You know all late night hosts are left wing. It's ironic that these negative reviewers loved the Colbert Report, which was overtly political and over the top in its political satire, but when Colbert comes to the Late Show and starts speaking out against the President their feelings get hurt so bad.
Swamp Thing (2019)
Really good!!!
Give it a try, it's so good! I didn't really think I would like a show like this but I did. So sad it got canceled.
The Man in the High Castle: Fire from the Gods (2019)
Not that bad, but not great
It really wasn't that bad. I think the writers wanted to leave it open-ended, as I think a lot of shows these days tend to do, because it's cliche to tie it all up in a nice little bow (especially for a show about such a messed up world where nothing seems to go right). They did not succumb to the superhero-happy ending where all the Nazis get killed, which is good because that would have trivialized the whole show. It doesn't really bother me that the people coming through at the end were left to interpretation. I think it's supposed to be symbolic in that there are countless lives and possibilities in this multiverse. However, I wish they had left us with a better idea of what was to come next. Otherwise it doesn't feel like a series conclusion, just a season cliffhanger. You can keep certain things open for interpretation because it can be artistic and make viewers think, but certain concrete plotlines should be tied up in the end. Like they should have built up to Smith's right hand man throwing away the Nazi emblem. I felt he wasn't developed enough as a character for you to understand his motivations considering he'd been blindly following Nazi orders and killing innocent people the whole time. And maybe give the BCR more of a purpose at the end. It didn't really explain what their plan was. It just needed more tidying up overall.
An Affair to Die For (2019)
Okay, would make a better play
I can totally see this as a one or two-act play on a small stage in an intimate theater. There are so many opportunities for actors to show off their chops. And there are twists and turns. As a movie, it's rather mediocre...probably why it's only a TV movie. But if I saw it as a stage play and it was really well acted, I think I would leave the theater feeling very satisfied.
Robin Hood (2018)
Great film, don't listen to the 1-star reviews
Maybe I had lower expectations going in, but I really enjoyed this movie. Don't expect it to be historically accurate or follow the original Robin Hood storyline. If it did, it would just be a remake. It has a different tale to tell, really fun action scenes, a stellar cast, and a simple but heartwarming story. It's not the greatest film ever made, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. As long as you don't try to compare it to other Robin Hood movies but instead see it as a stand alone action/myth/hero story, it's great fun to watch.
