Pleasantly Surprised
24 February 2015
I had never heard of this movie before a colleague recommended it and even then, had no intention of watching it. I was bored and watched it and MY OH MY was I pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I thought it would be a cheesy movie but the story and actors were extremely believable. The addition of realistic award show backdrops added to the current condition of the music industry psyche. Soundtrack was lovely and I enjoyed hearing a current Amel Larrieux jam during such a touching scene. (Sidenote: Check out Ice Cream Every Day for more Amel gems!)

I HIGHLY recommend this movie to anyone interested in a combination of a love story and music. And if this helps, I wouldn't describe this as a chick flick at all - it has a universal appeal to anyone who stays current with the industry and knows how it can steal souls.

Conjured more negative than positive emotions

I am a sucker for Christmas movies - even the sappy, corny ones. I was so excited to watch this when I read about it a few months ago as I interpreted it to be a feel good-little bit of sadness-overcome by fuzzy warmth at the end type of movie.

I was disappointed when it was over because I felt more sad and unsatisfied than anything. For some reason, the sad parts stood out to me more and weren't dominated by what should've been happy parts. I feel that they could've done a lot more with this story and the incredible actors.

If you love all things Christmas, please don't let my review deter you from watching and formulating your own opinion. You might love it! I just didn't.

This movie is getting unwarranted bad reviews

I'm disappointed to see so many judgmental reviewers who are completely overlooking the premise of this movie. While it may not be for everyone, it certainly was entertaining and in a sea of meaningless and offensive movies, this one actually spreads a positive message. I just wish people would stop watching and reviewing Tyler Perry movies if they don't like him or his previous work or believe his plots are redundant. If you're not a fan, stay away...that's a no-brainer.

That being said, I loved this movie simply for the emotions it put me through. Though the relationships between the characters could have gone deeper, I'm just not one to overanalyze a movie. I tend to go by how it made me feel as I was watching it and how I felt walking out of the theater.

If you like Tyler Perry movies or just enjoy some good old fashioned laughs and cries, please disregard everything you've read about it and go see the movie. Judge it for yourself without any bias.

Thoroughly entertaining

Romeo Must Die was an awesome debut by Aaliyah Haughton and pairing her with Jet Li made it that much more memorable. She worked hard to prepare for the role of Trish and her perseverance paid off.

The action sequences are amazing and the drama gets intense at moments. Overall, the plot is exciting and the actors meshed well. There are rare moments of comedy that make you laugh out loud and help balance the film. The soundtrack is noteworthy and compliments the hip hop/martial arts vibe.

I would've liked to have seen more of a love connection/chemistry between the leading roles but regardless, it's worth watching and purchasing the DVD as a collector's item in memory of the late, great Aaliyah.

An eloquently outstanding movie

I don't tend to get very technical when it comes to judging or rating movies but rather rely on the emotions invoked in me while watching the movie.

The Family That Preys is wonderfully written and is a rare treasure in a sea of high technology/excessively violent/obscenely sexual movies being released today.

Quite simply, this movie touches on varying emotions without going over the top. The viewer is invited to feel the hurt of spousal betrayal, the love of family, the anger from blatant deceit and the unconditional limitless boundaries of true friendship.

Please don't let the majority of the poor ratings fool you, this movie is sophisticated and proves Tyler Perry, yet again, to be a class act.
