Fall Out Boy: The Young Blood Chronicles (2014)
Watch it twice.
This was WAY better than I expected. I only found it because I like the songs off this album, and when casually re-watching some of the videos, realized they were connected into a cohesive story. The first pass is kind of a mindf*k, but on the second viewing the story really comes together. Pay attention to the details in this neat little 'good vs evil' take, because clearly there was a lot of effort put into them. All of the band members acted it out quite convincingly. The side characters were interesting and there were some fun additions with respect to the other artists involved. I found this to be intense, fast paced, great imagery, and it was surprisingly emotionally engaging as well.
We Go On (2016)
Actually scary
I found this movie to be genuinely scary, and I am a hard sell. It's hard to say much about it without reducing its effect... Just go into it with nothing more than the description of the storyline, and enjoy the ride. I have watched it multiple times because I like to share it with other people, and it holds up. It doesn't hurt if you're fascinated by speculation about what happens after we die of course. There were some jump scares, of course, but there's also a deeper level of horror present aside from that, and it stays with you. Genre wise, I guess it's similar to White Noise, Mothman Prophecies, or any of the Sci-Fi attempts at experimenting with what's on the other side... But well made compared to a lot of that latter category.
Annie (2014)
Pleasantly surprised! This was actually really good.
I enjoyed the "old" version of Annie that I grew up with, and expected this one to be a typical, falls-short-of-the-original remake...probably with an ethnic twist. This was SO not that! I actually liked this version *better*. The songs were excellent--some were catchy, others actually kind of touching. (I got the soundtrack right after watching the movie.) One song in particular really knocked my socks off, and it's new to this version--but I won't spoil it for you. The 80's version of Annie was far more campy than this one. The "updating" was not gratuitous but simply necessary (to keep it relatable to a modern audience). The actress who plays Annie is excellent-- amazingly so for a girl her age. If you like rock musicals, I'd say give this one a shot. :-)
The War of the Worlds (2005)
Surreal and intellectual--NOT the typical mainstream fodder.
People who simply want to watch a bunch of explosions and high end special effects, should wait for Spielberg's mutilated version. So should those who can't get "into" a time period other than their own. That said, the Pendragon film was an excellent adaptation of the book! It had a surreal quality, and also a real sense of being in a much older time. I found it classy and unique--a far cry from the same old-same old that rules the theatres these days, the stuff that relies solely on effects or one's romantic visions of the actors. This story carries *itself*. Downsides: the effects are flawed in some places, it does move slowly, and the aliens look silly (but then again, what alien doesn't ;) and the description was taken from the book, not invented for the film.) I really enjoyed watching WOTW, and I think Pendragon did a fantastic job--if you can appreciate a rare treat like Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis, or Phil Cook's Despiser...check out this film. :-)
