The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Good in its own right but still misses the mark
I am like many people who have reviewed this, I was drawn to it after the "perfectly splendid" Hill house (sorry, I couldn't resist). It starts well with the whole disturbing reflection scenario that really gets in your amygdala (a la conjuring etc) but then slows to an almost stop. Very little chills for some time and then it completely loses its way in the middle with a wholly unnecessary and confusing memory of ghosts flashback for almost two episodes??? Nice love story (not what I signed up for) and partially saved by the last two episodes with some excellent story telling, but whatever way you look at it the mark is missed.
Gangs of London (2020)
Started strong but went off the boil - ultimately flawed
I'm a die hard lover of the crime/gangster genre as well as British films so was super excited by this, sadly it didn't live up to expectations. Although the overall production value was high and I actually loved the "chopsocky" type exaggerated fight scenes, the story seemed to have a lack of continuity and just stretched my suspension of disbelief too far, add to this the fact that Joe Cole was completely mis-cast as the lead as he is far too weak (his Stewy voice from family guy was actually ridiculous) and the whole thing started to lack the credibility and gravity it so badly needed. Could have been a modern day classic but sadly fell way short...
Ghost (2020)
Thoughtful and atmospheric low budget Brit film
A really well thought out and considered film, slow but atmospheric with tension building along the way, not least with the father and son relationship. If your looking for a typical British crime / gangster film look elsewhere but if your in the mood for something slower and innovative (shot on an iPhone 8 - really!!!????) then give it a go, I love the usual UK blokey/ crime stuff, however this isn't it, nonetheless I have to say it's the finest hidden gem I've found all year. I don't normally write reviews but really felt this deserved one.
