1899 (2022)
Exciting and mysterious, but ultimately a first act. Much larger than Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese yet again prove themselves masterful creators.
With Dark being my all time favourite piece of media, I couldn't have been more hyped for 1899. Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are truly one of Netflix's best showrunners. Dark was perfect, a masterpiece of TV.
Much like first season of Dark, I feel 1899's first season serves at it's first act which many might have a problem with; I suspect that with the addition of the rest of what 1899 has to offer, we can find a more cohesive story. You cannot only watch the first season of Dark without feeling like something is missing.
Baran bo Odar's direction is incredible, as well as the costumes to set design, everything we see is meticulous and breath taking. Jantje Friese's writing is complex and suspenseful, bleak and mysterious - although some of the larger themes are sometimes said rather than shown, just like her work of Dark, we're getting some brilliant writing.
Both have presented us with an incredible first season of what I expect to be another amazing work of art, and although we cannot yet see the full picture, if the creators previous work is anything to go by, I think 1899 is going to surprise everyone.
Westworld: Fidelity (2022)
Beautifully disturbing, Westwold's 4th season gets even better
To keep it short, if you've not started to watch season 4 based off your feelings for season 3, put those feelings behind you and come experience some of the best Westworld to date. This season has been much darker, this episode encapsulates that perfectly, especially with its beautifully dark, ethereal soundtrack, "Fidelity" shows us some of the most disturbing storytelling we've ever gotten from Westworld, reminding me a lot of season 2's James Delos storyline.
Westworld: Well Enough Alone (2022)
A much darker season of Westworld is in store, and it's brilliant
After last week's premiere, I was optimistic about season 4. The premier caught us up after long time gap between season 3 and 4, in which most of the episodes run time had been dedicated to catching up with some "new" and "old" characters. I feel that this episode, 'Well Enough Alone' is an episode that would've worked well as part of a double episode premier - to reintroduce fans who found themselves unimpressed with Westworld's third season to a much more dark future. This season, after only 2 episodes, seems to paint the much darker and more bleak future I think we'd envisioned after season 2 and I'm looking forward to seeing what season 4 has to offer.
With a fantastic soundtrack full of dark, droning, ambient futuristic IDM supporting this season's much bleaker tone, I feel we're truly starting to get that apocalypse that was hinted at in season 3. There's definitely a lot of unravel and I for one am just as excited for this season's mysteries as I was when watching season 1.
Westworld: The Auguries (2022)
As captivating as ever, even after a polarizing third season
The first episode of this season opens us up to another season full of mystery. Season 3 was polarizing to say the least but I admire the showrunners for working on and exploring the new sights of a future that feels closer to now than ever, delving deeper into new themes. Westworld, even when polarizing still doesn't fail in providing some of the most beautiful and captivation TV we have on offer, a beautifully immersive world full of deep philosophical themes, inspiring worldbuilding, incredible writing and atmosphere. I think I find myself in a small minority of fans who still enjoyed season 3, which had me extremely excited for season 4. So far, I'm really looking forward for what's in store, I hope you can too.
I understand that many fans felt burnt out by season 3, as it wasn't without it's flaws but I hope that you can join me in catching up with one of the most creative shows we have at this level. It's not very often that we get to experience a show like Westworld.
