The Border: Floral Tribute (2008)
A wonderful episode
I've started to watch The Border about a month ago, and as most Canadian series, this one grips you by the throat and doesn't let go.
This ep. was no exception. Not only the way they handled the new case was awesome (and again, showing how governments and intelligence agencies really "cares" about the little people), but the major story arc (Kessler, Darnell and the shooting) was beautifully (yet not fully ) resolved. And it was a treat to see Richard Chevellau again (he's a WONDERFUL actor).
This is what I like about The Border- everyone is on the edge, there's a lot at stake, and there's always some shady conspiracy and hidden agendas. Not to mention great character development. Don't miss this Canadian masterpiece =)
Unstable (2009)
predictable, but still well done and suspenseful
A woman, who was in an abusive relationship that had broken her mentally and took her 4 years to get back on her feet after her breakdown, finally managed to get her life back on track. she meets a man who seems comfortable with her situation (she's still on meds), they fall in love, get married... BUT things start to happen, as our heroine misplaces her keys, her phone, the shirt she bought in the color green is suddenly red, and everybody thinks she's becoming crazy again, even her husband. But, as always, there's more than meets the eye... or is it?!
A psychological thriller that uses plot-lines that we all have seen before, and you can guess from the get-go what's going to happen. but still, this movie is very well done. the story has a good pace that doesn't let up, some logical twists, great writing and directing, and some fine acting from all actors involved.
But, all the credit goes to Shiri Appleby. I was waiting for her to do a role like that, something complicated, and she managed to do it perfectly. And, if you have seen her in other projects, then you know that she can really act. she was amazing here, playing a heroine who is somewhat crazy, paranoid but still knows how to survive and protect herself and keeping herself from breaking-down again.
All in all, a great movie, something you can watch on a Sunday afternoon or on a rainy evening, and you would not be disappointed. Sure, not the greatest film ever, but it's suspenseful, well acted and directed, and entertaining, and the major plus- Shiri Appleby.
final score: 9 out of 10.
Earth: Final Conflict (1997)
An intelligent show for intelligent people
What really surprises me is that a dumb-minded show like Andromed is loved by a lot of people, despite the stupidity of the show, and a brilliant show like EFC gets banned just because it actually dared to be different, thought=provoking, realistic and intelligent. I cannot fathom this.
I only say it because, as someone said in other review here, you would've thought that sci-fi fans would like to see more unique story lines. I finished not long ago watching all the five seasons of the show, and it was fun, thrilling, awesome, unique in more than one way, and evolved. the story lines DID HAVE CONTINUATION. i failed to understand how people missed that totally, but then again I guess they were too preoccupied with Boone's disappearance and other characters gone, then with seeing what was really important with this show: the STORY! that was all that matters. from the beginning of this marvelous show, the characters were important, but the story lines were more strong. i mean, for example: could you see Boone fighting out with Zo'or, after he became the leader of the Synod? i was actually glad that Liam arrived, cause he did more that Boone did, and he really put humans first. he knew that the Taelons and the humans are linked, there was no doubt with that. but with Zo'or as the leader, he also knew that neither race could fulfill its destiny, as Zo'or destroyed every chance for the species to evolve, especially the the salvation of the Taelons.
And so, as the S.4 begins, it becomes more clearer with future episodes of this season, that humanity was better off if the Taelons haven't arrived on earth. but they HAVE arrived, so now we fight back for our planet, with honor though and respect, which neither Zo'or and the majority of the humans, haven't learned the meaning of those words.
I tend to agree, however, that s.5 was a bit different, but still, the intensity, the suspense and a little intelligence was still a part of the show. Pay attention in later episode of this season (especially in ep.21 of the season, "The Journey"), that Renee finally grasped the idea that although her experience with the alien races were bad, that does not mean that there were all bad, and that in the end, we all have a dark side within ourselves (yes, even more evolved begins). she understood that her hate was blind, and to overcome one's enemy, one must understand him first.
This series was about the potential humanity have, if it only evolve right, and throw aside bad ideologies and greed, and jealousy, etc. it showed us that if we want, we can achieve greatness beyond our imagination, and more than that: humanity is much more noble than we give ourselves credit for. it is the Final Conflict between emotions, logic, needs, and what is the true meaning of being a human.
The L Word (2004)
L for Lame and Lousy
when i first hears of this series, i was exited and i was curious, because i thought that a female version of "quees as folk" is something that was well overdue. i even was happy to hear that some good actresses are playing there, as Mia Kirshner (which, i personally really love) and Jennifer Beals. but, the bigger the expectations get...
i was disappointed. at first, when i saw the pilot, i thought it was way too much extreme with the sex scenes. i thought i was watching a soft porn movie. the acting was bad, the story lines are not interesting at all. to me it felt like a low quality soap opera with too much physical action. i mean, really- there were too much sex scenes. i continued to watch until episode four, and then i decided to stop watch it. why? because of Jenny, the character Mia Kirshner portrays.
although Jeeny is the only interesting character in the series, she annoyed me. and not because she cried too much. because she's too weird. and she's not a stable person at all. the breaking point for me was when at the fourth episode she goes to Marina and tells her that she doesn't want to hurt Tim, her Boyfreind, but two seconds later she's having sex with her again. what da hell??? and what even irritated me more is that i couldn't understand why Jenny becomes a lesbian. there's no apparent reason for that. i am really disappointed of Mia too, can't figure why she took on herself this character. it's beyond me.
in conclusive- the writing is bad and not clear, the characters are too flat and unbelievable, and it is in no Way similar to QAF. far from it. it's a bad show, and i can't fully realize why so many people liked that...
