Better Watch Out (2016)
A pleasant surprise!
Really really enjoyed this one. Don't take it too serious and you'll have a great time. The cast really delivered, I was not expecting the twists and it got more and more dark and engaging as it went on. A dark version of "Home Alone."
Surprised at how unknown/underrated this one is. Recommending this to my friends, for sure.
Dirty John (2018)
Loved it.
Don't understand the negative reviews here at all. I binge watched this without knowing any backstory whatsoever of this real-life story, so it was unpredictable which kept me hooked. This was highly addicting with great acting and storytelling. Connie Britton was fantastic as Deb. Yes there was disagreement with her actions and I got annoyed with her multiple times, but at the same time felt bad due to Connie's strong portrayal of a broken and vulnerable woman looking for love.
The daughters were a fun addition to the show as well-anyone who says they're annoying doesn't understand this generation (or Southern California). Yes Veronica was spoiled and privileged, but also smart and badass. Same with Terra.
Great pacing, great setting, great story. Each episode was a rollercoaster.
Watch it, I loved it.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Blown away
What started for me as a fun and creepy Halloween show became so much more. I was totally expecting some sort of "Conjuring" with not much depth, but a fun scare that would maybe keep me on my toes at night. Instead, I got an emotional roller coaster with so much character depth, incredible acting, and mind blowing cinemotagraphy.
I really can only imagine how difficult it must be to create a genuinely good horror series. You not only need a good storyline, but good actors to carry the story, as well as directing that doesn't cheapen scares. This show scared me silly mainly throughout the first half, and left me sad and emotional throughout the second half. It really is a family drama more than anything that focuses on each family member's repressed trauma from their past in Hill House. The actors, both the kids and adults, are incredibly convincing in their roles. While it may be a story about a haunted house, it's all dealt with so realistically (partly because of the acting) that it's oddly believable.
Seriously, one of the best shows I've EVER seen. There may never be a horror show like this again. Thank you to the entire cast and production crew. Thank you Netflix.
