Nefarious (2023)
Please give me my 1.5 hours back!
More right wing religious mumbo-jumbo! This waste of film will have religious fanatics rushing to their confessionals in an attempt to stop from being tortured in "hell" (which I feel I went through watching this). The evangelicals will be rubbing their palms together in anticipation of their flock filling cathedral baskets with life savings to avoid damnation. Yawn... . This film had one audience in mind: the right wing nut jobs who believe in this old testament, mad god drivel. Even the psychiatric science is lacking when the doctor engages when he's being manipulated and he should not respond. That said, I think the acting was great and worth from 6 to 8 stars. The plot and content, however, were worth negative stars. So, I gave it 3 stars to balance it out. In short, if you're a religious nut job, you'll probably like it. If you're religious with common sense or non religious you'll probably want to give it a miss.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
A let down.
I've always been a huge fan of M. Night Shyamalan's films but this one let me down. Don't get me wrong, the acting by all cast members was absolutely bang on, the direction was superb and the production values were astounding. But, I found it to be pure religious nut fodder. I can see those who believe in prophecies and the "end of days"/revelations dropping to their knees seeking salvation after seeing this. However, we who do not subscribe to the four horsemen of the apocalypse scenario find it to be a bit of a money grab which tugs at the faiths of our counterparts in these deeply divided times. Furthermore, films such as these will accomplish nothing more than to further divide us.
Barbarian (2022)
2 only for the acting
I gave it 2 for the acting only (which deserves 10 out of 10). The story itself was terrible. I kept waiting for something terrifying or some unique plot twist to happen, to no avail. Why such fine actors accepted these roles is beyond me. This a B grade film at best. The hype, both pre to and post release, must've been fabricated by the movie's makers... no true horror fan would give it such high praise. I don't typically give films low ratings, as a lot of work goes into making them. This one, however, deserves to be torn to pieces. I think the actors must have been desperate for roles, but I can't see why as all are well respected, fine actors.
The Djinn (2021)
So underrated and underappreciated!
I don't know why people are giving this film such low ratings! It isn't a big budget film yet it delivers thrills and puts you on the edge of your seat. Ezra Dewey is definitely going places. His performance was very convincing and his emotions were very genuine. I really wasn't expecting much going in but was certainly pleasantly surprised at this hidden gem's shockers. Don't let the ratings put you off this one. However, don't go into it thinking it's a Hollywood blockbuster. It's a worthwhile low budget film with a solid story, script and performances.
Wander (2020)
Wasted talent
Like any other film with Ekhart or Tommy Lee Jones, I thought I was in for a treat.
Although their acting was bang on as usual, their choice of roles was not. The script was obvious conspiracy nut fodder with "deep state" type players plotting to control humanity via small town USA.
A poor man's espionage at best.
Little Joe (2019)
Had potential but falls short
It starts out well... It builds suspense, gives a romantic hint, introduces its characters, etc. Then, I kept waiting for a scene that would wow me to no avail. I didn't mind the Asian music but the high pitched noise was irritating. On a positive note, it does give us a peek into the world of horticultural research and how plant pheromones can affect us. Some people campared it to Invasion of the Body Snatchers but it also has elements of The Happening. The acting was very believable and sublime. However, in short, it could've been much better.
Still Open All Hours (2013)
Awesome!!
I don't know why some of you think this is insulting! Although it's a spin off from the original you have to see it as an entity all its own. David keeps Ronnie's character alive with the great photo and periodic stammer. A lot of the original cast is back joined by many fantastic newcomers. To you naysayers I say nay! This is an excellent show with many funny and warm moments. The old hand eating cash register is still having a go at Granville and the bosomy nurse Gladys still pays a visit. What more do you need?! The British have always been the masters of situation comedy and this is apparent in this show. Don't let the comments steer you away. This show is definitely worth watching. Great job!
The Visit (2015)
I cannot believe this was made!
Who in hell allowed this to be released?! How in hell did it get a rating above 6?! I'm starting to lose my faith in IMDb! A total waste of film and fine actors. M. Night should be ashamed of himself for making this abortion. No wonder he's been getting bad press recently!!
It might have been a good short for the likes of The Twilight Zone but not as an entire movie. I felt that it was a total waste of time and money.
The only good thing about this movie was the very believable acting. Other than that, the dialogue, story, plot, etc. were utter garbage. The director owes the cast and crew a lot after this drivel.
4:44 Last Day on Earth (2011)
A realistic take on the end of the world
I think this movie deserves more respect than it's been given. With all the very unrealistic takes on the end of the world floating around this one actually tantalizes you with an all too realistic perspective.
I have a feeling that those who gave it a low rating were expecting some huge dramatic, catastrophic ending. Instead, this movie focused on the lives of a couple of people and what they felt, did and witnessed with the knowledge that the world was ending.
In short, it isn't for the lazy mind which doesn't want to think. You need to be prepared to place yourself in the characters' shoes and feel what they're going through.
