Straight Up (2019)
So so cute
There's defínete something special about this film. You don't see this everyday. A normal story that gets into the complexity of regular life. From the way it was shot, and the heavy dialogues and mise en scéne.
Dolor y gloria (2019)
Painful masterpiece
I don't know how fictional this masterpiece it's. But it touched something very close to home. I'm a filmmaker I'm Latino and also gay and this movie resonated in every aspect of myself even tho I've been alive on this earth for only a 23 years, maybe less. It's a brilliant, sad piece that creates uncertainty throughout. From the bringing we get an idea of where the story is going. But the way it gets there it's so effective that I couldn't keep my eyes out of the screen. I love that the kid fainted right after seeing the guy naked. Things that only happen in movies. I also love the interaction between the old lover. It's so so emotional and realistic. These themes are very sensitive and Almodóvar knew how to tell the story correctly. He gave it all without showing much. I questioned sometimes the style of acting. The way they spoke wasn't natural but it carried a tone that never changed so that way it didn't bother me.
Jonas (2018)
A dark and modern Queer story.
This movie it's short. Straight to the point. Nothing it's unclear even tho nothing it's actually clear until the very end. It's super concise and has a resolution. Utterly mysterious and haunting. It's a painful ride that you will enjoy from the very bringing till the very end. Queer indie movies tend to be slow and painfully experimental sometimes or even boring. But this story it's bold, and it keeps you on edge. Themes such as trauma, bullying, gay culture and love are addressed in a very contemporary way. Christophe Charrier managed to have tense energy throughout the scenes that kept building on. He had a purpose for absolutely everything he showed on the screen. Clean, consistent cinematography as well, Beautiful job. The hookup scene with the catfish guy, Brilliant.
Enter the Void (2009)
Life decadence at its best
Gaspar is well known by taking nihilistic subjects and storylines aspects of life into a whole new world, a whole new level. Enter the Void gets as transgressive as it can be by showing you absolutely every grinch detail for absolutely no reason in particular. It's a complete multi-sensorial experience that takes life to a pointless level. And somehow he stills finds a way to find a resolution towards the end. A cycle an insensitive and depressing life cycle that the characters deal with. This movie it's so effective that I want to throw up. It's unbelievably visceral. It's a masterpiece that it's absolutely not for everyone.
Gisaengchung (2019)
BIGGEST RIDE OF 2019
Despite being incredibly edited and filmed. Beautiful dark cinematography. This movie takes you on a full on ride that no one is waiting for. The surprise factor and the randomness of the situations just keep adding up none stop. With a break point that leaves you with that empty feeling that something just ducked your soul and destroyed you inside but at the same time made you laugh and stay on deep silence to just digest.
Starting of by showcasing extremely complex characters you already know that you signed up for something entirely unusual. Lies and desperation can lead to absolute apocalypse. Every single scene adds to the story but it also makes it more twisted and complicated.
Do yourself a favor and watch this film.
Kids (1995)
When movies were Actually Independent
There was an amazing 2000's era where independent cinema was really going for it. They would make movies that actually follow a storytelling that's not safe and that's not meant to please an audience. Its meant to fulfill every aspect of an atmosphere. Movies like this make you believe in the magic of filmmaking. While watching this movie I felt unsafe, gross and like a pervert. There was not a single scene that had something gross or weird about it. It's completely Neolithic and it shows you how it's actually to grow up in certain settings. Nowadays it'll be impossible to make a movie like this. It'll be completely offensive and inappropriate and risky for box office. But back then they would go for it and make an amazing film that's actually enjoyable on its own way. It's a Masterpiece.
Midsommar (2019)
A bad trip master piece.
This movie it's the perfect combination of weirdness, horror, and uncertainty.
Camera work was insanely amazing and choreographed. And my favorite aspect of Ari aster. Sound. He isolated so many sounds and makes each scene so overwhelming on its own.
The build up of the tension in the film it's completely unavoidable. And it's a slow torture. It doesn't come at you right away. It destroys you slowly.
I've never seen a horror/intense movie with such a realistic script. They really made sure that this story made you feel like that could've been you at that place. Also I've never seen such a realistic drug trip made into a scene.
It's long. And it took its time to make you loose your mind. It's and immediate cult classic.
Roma (2018)
Emotional, a story that hasn't been told
It felt so great to get out of the mainstream cinema mindset and ran into this. Beyond raw masterpiece. The cinematography and color grading were so clever and beautiful it transported you to the time period. And the emotions were perfectly placed. It came it the right moment and nothing was forced. There's no twist no big surprises just life.
Assassination Nation (2018)
Powerful and intense
It gets from 0 to 100000000 in a second. This film was well written and directed. Aggressively edited. The main continuous shot it's EVERYTHING. and the script it's fun. It's about feminism. Labels and rebellion. Very very enjoyable.
I Kill Giants (2017)
This is actually AMAZING
Every scene does something, the plot is very strong, the acting very intense, and it touches you in many ways, it's a moving story about dealing with death and how a kid's mind tries to process that. It's brilliant
Eighth Grade (2018)
Simple
Lots of people could emotionally relate to such a well told story. Is raw, is candid and it's complete you current. His mix of comedy drama and coming of age feelings are very well distributed. And movie lovers would really appreciate the use of sound and music to intensify the emotions and the use of silence too. Personally the car scene was the best one I. Terms of writing, acting and cinematography.
Hereditary (2018)
Completely clever use of horror
It's been a while since I don't feel so anxious in a film. Unlike other horror jumpy movies during this one you'll jump but also the story itself is gonna hunt you till the end. Is one of the darkest movie I've seen in a while and the cinematography qualities and details helped create a very specific mood to the scenes. I love the big contrast with dark and and bright colors on the fire or red etc. It was very successful that they focused a lot on frontal shots to completely feel and digest the actors reactions. Is very very bizarre and disturbing. The scene where the brother kills his sister is everything. I can't believe how convincing and horrible it was. LOVED IT
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Insanely clever
The script and storyline was made in a way that is impossible to get bored. Is an experimental way of a linear narrative, by going back and forth because he's dying all the time. Is so clever. Plus all the references of movies, music and pop culture that just makes it more relatable to the everyday life. And the diversity of the cast and the black humor made the movie so pleasent to watch. The actions are aggressive and it can get very explicit but that's the spark about Deadpool. Very good job.
Truth or Dare (2018)
Come on, there's nothing wrong with this movie
It has an interesting twist and it makes you have more and more questions, the plot is strong, predictable st the beginning but and then it get really good. And as other successful horro movies it leaves you wanting more. I personally don't see anything wrong with this movie. Is pleasant to watch. the editing is strong as expected on an horro movie and the few climaxes of the scary parts were successful.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Disney got experimental and it wasn't horrible at least.
So basically is a movie about kids taking acid. I do appreciate the experimental and cinematography qualities of this film, there are a few times when it gets amazingly done! And others when it looks cheap and bad written. It's indeed and unforgettable piece. I little to over the place. And the main character the little girl, she's the while movie. Amazing amazing performance for such a weak script.
Unsane (2018)
An indie masterpiece
It has been such a long time since I don't feel so much anxiety in a movie theater, the story was perfectly edited in a way that it doesn't reveal to much until it gets to the climax. The fact that it was shot on an iPhone made it look more personal and sort of engaging. The iPhone quality automatically relates to our daily lives and in a way you feel like your spying and watching. It's such a well done thriller it never gets slow or boring. It's obviously not for everyone. But for people who love well tell stories this is your movie.
Annihilation (2018)
Such an Experimental masterpiece
This movie has the perfect combination of drama, comedy and horror, not to mention that the characters are amazing strong women breaking all stereotypes. In terms of aesthetic and filming it was unrealistic how surreal the sets were, everything felt like a dream and a nightmare at the same time. The set designers and director made an unbelievable job. The visuals made me wanna explore more and more my own experimental side. I am truly obsessed with this movie.
Gringo (2018)
Very entertaining - heavily racist tho
The movie is extremely dynamic, you don't get bored a second. I'm surprised people haven't pay more attention to this movie. But It plays full on stereotypes and is extremely racist and classist.
Thoroughbreds (2017)
Strong Plot, slow storytelling
The concept of the movie is amazingly strong, and probably something that this generation of movies haven't seen before, however the overuse of stablishing shots made the storytelling slow and a bit boring even though what was happening is extremely entertaining. It is still one of my favorite movies from 2018
