Yanks (1979)
Way Overrated
Tale of 3 GI's in 1943 England and their love affairs - all of which are unconvincing and totally lacking in any chemistry. Then you got silly overlong pointless dance scenes. Even while watching parts at 3x speed and reading the subtitles, it was all too slow and tedious. A partially nude Vanessa Redgrave is something I never wanted, buy cant unsee. Great production values and cinematography though.
There Was a Crooked Man... (1970)
Great Fun
First saw it in 1970. It is even better than I remembered. I kept pausing, backing up and watching scenes multiple times. Great acting, dialogue. 50 years later so many scenes I remember. Robust soundtrack is a little distracting, but it is a film of it's times. I savored and enjoyed every minute of it. And yes, I too recall that Barbara Rhoades' top was pulled down - missing in the DVD version I saw.
Ulzana's Raid (1972)
6/10
Before I be watching any movie eye's always be blocking opening credits so my review isn't influenced by big named directors or actors for that matter. I didn't knows until de end that this was a Robert Aldrich movie - had I known I woulda probably rated it higher. But it be only a 6/10 coz although it is only about 1hr 40mins it just takes too long to gets anywhere. And omg the violence was really shocking - I let out a whoop! A couple times for sure.
Bullitt (1968)
10/10
It was a 10 when I first saw it in 1971 and it's still a 10. Everything about it is stylish and cool. Everyone in the theater would always laugh at the grimacing Marine who crosses the screen at the end. Still not sure why 'Ross' lifted the latch on the door - did he think the mob was coming up to rescue him..?
Cross of Iron (1977)
Whatever..
Overly long - could of been so much better cut down to 90 minutes. Unbearable bad acting by Coburn. Good action sequences though. Do Russian soldiers really make a habit of running into machine gun fire like that..?
Rolling Thunder (1977)
Passable
Cult classic? Ignored..? Overlooked..? Gee, I must be getting old. This was a big deal when it came out. It's only been 'forgotten' by new generations who are just discovering it. I be very stingy with ratings and me giving it a 6 means something was done right.
Like someone said, William DeVane REALLY underplays it to the point of ridiculous. Yeah, it dragged in some places, but the believable dialogue kept me interested. I didn't fast-forward it at all which is rare for me (except when DeVane is getting his shirt taken off - no thanks).
Uncut Gems (2019)
Uncut Boredom
Everyone be talking over each other like the old Roger Altman movies, and it's at least an hour too long. Sandler's just being Sandler mumbling throughout the movie. The confusing plot moves along excruciatingly slow - sitting in the theater you'll wish you could hit the fast forward. A 6 minute pointless scene of the family watching the daughter in a school play..really.?
La La Land (2016)
Kept wanting to fast-forward..
Good music (not great - this is no 'Grease'), and dancing. Unfortunately, Emma Stone can't sing, dance or act. But Ryan Gosling is terrific in it. He can do it all - what a talent.
There was absolutely NO chemistry between the two of them.
The tearful observatory screen dancing in the stars was really beautiful. For me, that one screen was worth surviving the entire movie.
And of course, this goes without saying in every Hollywood movie: - it was waaaayyyy too long.
