Georgy Girl (1966)
I should see it again...
This film gets seven out of ten on acting alone. James Mason is perfectly creepy, and yet you can still sympathize with him. Lynn Redgrave is just... perfect for the part. And Alan Bates.... yes I confess it, I had a crush on him too. Favorite scene: the alternating, silent close-ups between Georgy and Jos, as Jos slowly realizes that he is, in fact, in love with Georgy (before following her around half of London yelling "I love you!" at the top of his lungs!!!)
I seem to recall that the ending was somewhat disturbing for me when I originally watched it... I wonder how I would feel about it now. Most reviewers I've read seem to believe that Georgy has found herself in the end; I disagree. I leave individual viewers to make up their own minds.
Our Mutual Friend (1998)
Adaptation and Acting Suuperb, although I have a bone to pick with Dickens...
The cast (except for Paul Bailey) was excellent, especially Steven Mackintosh, who did a wonderful job portraying John Harmon. I have never been disappointed by this top-rate actor. Anna Friel, David Morrissey, Timothy Spall, Dominic Mafham, and David Bradley also were wonderful.
The adaptation was also excellent. There were whole chunks of dialogue taken from the novel, and the story followed very closely to the novel as well. All in all an excellent film.
I am giving this a ten out of ten for the acting and the adaptation for film. Not the plot. I was disappointed with the ending of the plot of the book, and naturally, the film follows that plot. The ending is very lame, and I am sure Dickens could have thought up a much better closure. Still, a very high quality film all around. To any one who reads this, see the film in question! Especially to see Steven Mackintosh act...
What's New Pussycat (1965)
Fantastic! Peter O'Toole is my hero!
I cannot understand what everyone's problem is with this movie. The acting is absolutely superb on everyone's part, particularly Peter O'Toole. Nay sayers complain that Peter O'Toole was completely wrong for this character, but I think that this might have been because they did not realize that his performance was not a depiction of a character. It was, in fact, a caricature of himself. Peter Sellers is, of course, hilarious. That goes without saying. His depiction of Dr. Fassbender is much funnier than his depiction of Inspector Clouseau, in my opinion. However, Peter O'Toole undoubtedly gives the best performance in this film. WATCH THIS MOVIE!
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962)
Absolutely fantastic!
This film... is amazing. This is the only way that I can POSSIBLY describe the brilliant acting performance of Tom Courtenay, one of my all-time favorite actors. His depiction of Colin, a young man from the lower class society of Nottingham, is remarkable. In fact, depiction is quite the wrong word for what he does with that character. Courtenay does not play Colin, he IS Colin, pure and simple. I will not give a summary simply because it is impossible to explain the story line without seeing the film. I have tried to explain the story line to my friends, and they just can't understand why I'm raving about. Anyone who is reading this, WATCH THIS MOVIE! It is one of the best films the '60s has to offer.
