Crimes of the Future (2022)
Just when I thought I was over this movie...
I'm not going to lie. I got about halfway through this movie and felt like I was missing so much information to help me distinguish what in the world was going on. You feel like you're being tossed into conversations about subjects you should already know about or a universe you should already be familiar with. About halfway in, I assumed I'd come out of it really disliking the movie (on storyline alone - the practical effects, acting, and cinematography are still great).
But once it started to click... I felt really engaged with the story. I'm glad I stuck it out. Is there a lot more I would have loved to have understood about this world that was left out? For sure. Is this movie for everyone? Absolutely not. I think the average movie viewer isn't going to like this. It's meant to make you uncomfortable. But if you're a fan of body horror or artsy sci fi... you may end up enjoying this one.
The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
Could have been good...
The plot could have been made into a decent movie but the execution was pretty bad. Weird pacing, a lot of CGI blood, and a predictable snooze fest for a good portion of the movie. To it's credit, I wasn't expecting it to end quite in the way it did... hard to explain but what I can say is it's partially predictable and partially way out of left field.
I think some people may enjoy this but in my opinion, I really just felt like something was missing the entire time I was watching it. People who like gore, even with a lacking plot, I think they'd have fun with this movie. However, I think there is a reason most people haven't heard of this one.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Under Appreciated, But I Think I Know Why...
I went into this movie out of boredom and just wanted to watch something and hope it wasn't horrible. What I got was something better than I expected.
It is a found footage film so I totally understand why this would be a huge turnoff for some. Believe me, I'm not a fan of this genre. However, I think they actually did a really good job with this one.
I will say, if you aren't into occult and theological symbology.... you aren't going to get much out of this film. There was a lot I noticed on the first watch and even more to find and appreciate on the second watch. If you are, I totally recommend giving it a shot.
