I expected this to be a biography and instead was completely blown away with THE most captivating thing. If you like entrancingly gothic, supernatural epics, character-driven, and visually beautiful, this is all of that and more. The opening scene grabbed me and that was it. It takes you on such a journey. I am completely obsessed. The idea to place Gogol as a character in his stories is brilliant. They cast him perfectly. You can't help but love this character. Alexander Petrov is fantastic. And what happens is stunning, shocking really. The setting and costumes, the ideas and the characters are truly enchanting ! It is truly in my top 3 shows that I have ever watched, the other 2 being El Hipnotizidor and Penny Dreadful. I can't help but gush. I so hope they continue with it.

I absolutely enjoyed this series. It is humorous and fun. Jack, Dan, and the Cap are charismatic, wonderful actors in this. Each episode is full of action and interesting action at that. There truly isn't been a bad episode. This Australian Western goes in different directions than any American ones I have ever seen. The scenery is beautiful. They weave in romance and treachery. It has everything. I wish the show would have continued. It is really just what is needed to escape and just have fun watching a show. I want more shows like this...just fun and well-acted, and well-written.

Suddenly, Doctor Who has become Miss Frizzle and the Magic School bus. There are so many companions they could be called her entourage, but not so because the decisions are made by committee. The Doctor should at least be the leader. The Doctor would not voice every thought and feeling he had. Nor would he looked puzzled half the time. Each episode is pretty much a history lesson. And since when can they not kill anyone? Some times it was necessary. Gallifrey was obliterated. Now it isn't. And they always brought the companions back to when they left so no one noticed they were gone. The writer that left was sorely needed. This just sucks.

Fun, different, and keeps your interest

The "American character" is the main reason I tried this show. Dominic Monaghan is always delightful. If you don't know, he is a Brit. And he is doing a decent job with the NY accent and attitude. His portrayal of a "tough New York cop" is the humor of the show, which is needed in a show like this or it can be terribly dismal. If you have met any guys from New York, this is their general outlook- they are tough because they are from New York, no matter how small they are. I love it. They even bring up the Red Sox vs. Yankees rivalry, which is such a big part of being from Boston (my neck of the woods). The other attitudes about their sports, opinion of guns, so forth, are authentic inside jokes. So I think the nuances of the American character are just lost on an European audience, but a complete delight to us, especially if you realize that the tough New York cop is a hobbit!! So from the sounds of the review from the European viewpoint, it works for both. Watch it!

The story line of Kit Marlowe interested me most. His search for meaning and willingness to try anything just to feel was captivating. His delve into religious and supernatural means to seek it was compelling. Bower was completely seductive. I would like to pluck all of his story and make it into one movie. I don't know if I would have stuck with it if there wasn't that juxtaposition of Will with his faith and Kit with his search for it. Nonetheless, I began to care about all the characters in this bizarre show and I looked forward to seeing it every week. Who would have thunk it? And as a writer, the last line wrung true especially as it was delivered by Marlowe.

SPOILER ALERT. The actual title should be "Igor and his Huge Pus-filled Tumor". How the very idea of having the hunchback actually being a pus-filled tumor which they disgustingly drain ever made it to screen makes me wonder how many souls were sold to the devil. Radcliffe is ridiculous as an abused clown in a traveling circus. I can't imagine pitching this movie: "Igor will be an abused clown in a traveling circus. And his hunchback is really just a pus-filled tumor...." "Hey great idea! Let's throw millions of dollars at it. But maybe Igor the Creepy Clown won't bring people in. Let's deceive them and call it Victor Frankenstein--a dynamic interesting man. Bait and switch--yeah, that will work!" On top of that, the monster is like something out of the SyFy channel's movie of the week. I only gave it three stars for McAvoy's portrayal of Victor Frankenstein.

We watched this thinking that if it is HBO and BBC it must be good. Not one bit. It was a total waste of time. The husband threw out his phone once he knew his wife was missing (Wouldn't he want his phone in case she tried to call him?). If you waste time finding out why (do they even say?), just that alone shows why this is a bunch of poorly written bullshit. I hate to leave bad reviews but this was so bad and a waste of five hours of my life that could have been entertained by a plethora of other shows that would have been better. There are so many choices of stuff to watch.I would rather I never saw this. I hated it. It will only get three stars because there are a few good actors in it.
