Reacher (2022)
A strange and satisfying mix
Think the Dukes of Hazzard and the A-Team crossed with the Bourne series and crime scenes straight from S7even.
The script is poor, yet interspersed with witty, punchy one liners. F bombs seemingly drop from nowhere. I don't know Reacher from the novels, but I'd guess fans will be suitably pleased.
Sometimes you just throw a random bunch of ingredients into the pan and come up with a surprising result. This is that dish.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Game changer
Devastatingly perfect. This level of gorgeousness should not be possible. Shakespearean in stature. Prepare all your human emotions for a descent into the core of the human condition.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
All smoke and no fire....
Can "smokejumpers" be beautiful? Probably, but unfortunately Jolie is a bit too beautiful to save this mess of a movie. Hoult and Gillen ( both great talents ) will probably wish this could be erased from their resume. The cinematography and the song Lighthouse by William Prince as the credits roll get a star each.
Surviving Death (2021)
I want my time back
I'm about to switch this off. Episode 1, ok, fine....maybe??
This brings me to episode two and three ....(although as I write this they seem to have finally clicked....DOH!! ). The whole mediumship industry is singlehandedly destroyed, by a ridiculous Dutch woman who occasionally poops ectoplasm....but only in the dark! Switch the lights back on and whooosh!! Straight back up from hence it came.
During one excruciatingly uncomfortable scene, a British medium, now living off the spoils of the desperate and grieving, fails completely to relay a message from "the other side".
Seriously, if you are reading this and considering spending some of your hard earned cash on trying to contact dead relatives... watch this first. And maybe look up the meaning of Faith.
Shocking on all levels. I expect so much more from Netflix.
Truth Seekers (2020)
A huge letdown
Pegg and Frost have provided some real laughs over the years. Sean of the Dead is often listed in top 100 films of all time lists...and deservedly so. There were moments in that movie of genuine fear, padded out by hilarious dialogue.
Unfortunately this new show offers neither. It simply isn't funny....and definitely not scary. Maybe it's because the bar had been set so high? Who knows..I gave it 4 episodes, but if I'm not feeling it after that, then I know it's not for me.
Busanhaeng (2016)
A lot of brains for a zombie flick
An emotional and terrifying dissection of what it is to be human. Social satire competes with melodrama and gore into this frenetic South Korean horror triumph. Movies about the undead have essentially been built on a foundation of fear of our fellow man. Yet TTB takes that a step further by building on the idea that, even in our darkest days, we need to look out for each other, and it is those who climb over the weak to save themselves who will suffer. Performances are outstanding all around, especially from the young Kim Su-an who incredibly makes every nightmarish scene seem utterly real.
Max Richter's Sleep (2019)
Watch then listen
This documentary provides an intimate look into how this truly beautiful piece of art was conceptualised and brought to life. The brainchild of Max Richter, a prolific composer who has added such essential scores to TV and films, such as The Leftovers, Arrival, Hostiles and Ad Astra, this eight hour lullaby has been his labour of love for twenty five years.
This film documents a live open air performance in Los Angeles, one of nine that were showcased around the world. With interviews from Richter, his partner and musical collaborator Yulia, and comments from attendees of the event, it achieves it's goal of an explanation and origin story.
Ultimately though, Sleep is a musical experience that transcends our consciousness between our two natural states, and the blurred reality that joins them. So make sure you have the full album ready to sing you to sleep as the credits begin to roll. You cannot fail to be moved.
I'll Be Gone in the Dark (2020)
Incredible
This docu-series is primarily about the late Michelle McNammara, and her valiant attempt to piece together the clues so that the offender is both caught and brought to justice. What follows is a beautifully and humane study of how anything can become an obession, and how obessions will always take their toll. Will this project help the victims and their families? Will it help Patton in his grief? I think so, and they deserve it. Will it sell more copies of the book of the same title... definitely, but surely anyone in objection of this is simply jealous of others success. I was hooked from the beginning, and resisted the temptation to Google how it ended. Michelle had her demons, but she made a difference. We all have demons, how many of us make a difference?
Force of Nature (2020)
Simple a disgrace
I've seen a lot of movies in my 45 years. Superb, excellent, great, good, fair, ok, not great, bad, awful and now this. As another shocked reviewer has stated, and I agree 100%, this IS the WORST film of all time. I'm not even going to begin to set out the plot. Everything, and I mean everything, is as bad as it could possibly be. Gibson is awful, although in his defence he has nothing to work with. However, and I am not a mean person, Emile Hirsch"s performance is the worst ever on screen performance, period. Why he was even cast for this who knows. I can only imagine all other "B/C list" actors could see this disaster in waiting and dodged what is certain to be the role that ends his career. And he once showed promise. There is no cinematography. The editing is a disgrace. Just nothing. Nothing made sense. I could forgive a weak story with the odd plot hole if people had actually put effort into how it looked or sounded. In one scene Emile Hirsch who looks about 5ft 6 takes off his police shirt and gives it to the bad guy who is about 6ft 2 and twice as heavy...and it fits?? One minute a guy is bleeding out, barley conscious, next he's running down stairs and swimming? Even the elusive pet "cat", when it jumps out the pantry is simply an inanimate black cardboard cut out.
This director should never work again unless it a toothpaste commercial.
Unlike other bad movies I cannot even recommend watching it for the fun factor. It was deeply depressing on all levels.
