The Last Duel (2021)
7/10
A solid adaptation
3 December 2021
I had been looking forward to this film since I saw the first trailer - and doubly so after reading the book that it's based on. (Definitely read the book before or after seeing the film; it has a lot more detail and interesting tidbits of information).

Overall, I think this is a solid adaptation, slowed only by Ridley's use of chapters to tell the story. I felt this really slowed the momentum that leads up to the duel itself - which was definitely the highlight of the film for me.

A gaunt story
31 August 2021
Compared to Diablo 2, this game feels very thin. While i understand the focus is on what comes AFTER the main campaign, the main story nevertheless feels super thin and uninspired.

Awesome cinematics, as always, but otherwise, I was a bit disappointed.

Worth a watch

Campy dialogue, solid animation, and a cool story. A fun twist on a classic franchise.

Don't listen to the incel boys of Reddit who are out in force swamping the show in bad reviews. It's worth a watch!

A solid sci-fi dystopia

Grim, grey with stunning cinematography. Not exactly a home run but a solid film for sci-fi and dystopian fans. Worth a watch.

Entertaining, but room for improvement
23 April 2021
Kano was amazing. Absolute highlight of the film.

I expected more blood and violence. Compared to the new video games, this might of well been PG-13. I was disappointed by this.

I think there is potential with the follow-up films if they can tighten things up. Otherwise, this will be a fun but underwhelming trip down nostalgia lane.

Not much better
23 March 2021
I didn't make it 30 minutes into the original cut. It was terrible.

I've two hours into the Snyder cut and it's really not much better. Sub-par CG and a disjointed plot rally make this drag. I doubt I'll be able to finish it to be honest - which is a shame because I really wanted it to be good.

Unfortunately predictable
24 December 2020
I saw the "twist" from the start - like most people. What could have been a unique 'end of the world' film was jus another rehash of the same old stuff.

Disappointing.

A hard-hitting emotional masterpiece
22 November 2020
I've never in my life been more affected by a video game. The story is gut wrenching and compelling, and I still pause to reflect on it months after playing.

While the game mechanics are nothing new, the story was masterfully told. Hands down, this is one of the greatest games I've ever played.

A gruesome mystery well worth taking the time to watch
21 February 2019
Most of the negative reviews come from people who didn't understand the movie. If you want a one-dimensional flick, go watch something else. But if you have the patience and curiosity, this movie will reward you in the end.

You just need to pay attention.

A slow burn
30 January 2019
Nothing spectacular but definitely not worth all the hate. I suspect all the criticisms come from the trailer seeming more fast paced than the film actually is. That, and I think a lot of climate change deniers came out in force. 🤷‍♂️

The move is a bit flat, but it's worth a watch if you've got nothing better to binge.

A Failed Attempt At Awesome
25 March 2016
I've had low expectations for the recent comic book movies. Deadpool greatly surpassed them, which was a very pleasant and entertaining surprise. Batman vs Superman, however, did not.

As many have noted, the first half of the film is terribly disjointed. It cuts from story to story with no captivating narrative. Many elements of an entertaining action movie were there, but they were left floundering by the insanely poor editing of the film.

Without giving too much away I will say this: the last chapter of the film is at least partially redeeming. If the follow-up Justice League films can mimic the final section of B v S then perhaps things will work out. If not, I guess we will all have to settle for Marvel.
