All for Love: Mona (1982)
Terrific little film
This is a beautifully acted coming of age story, with an unusual friendship that makes all the difference in the lives of two people. The teenage Mona, approaching time to leave school and go into service, befriends an aging WWI veteran considered dangerous (crazy?) by most of the people around him. The two develop a strong relationship when they each need exactly that. Capt. Manson, against his instincts, allows her to enter his life, and finds that, sometimes, just having someone there for you, to spend quiet time with you, turns a bitter end into something else. Not a lot of chatter, just a beautiful interlude. My husband and I have watched this one many time, always charmed by the quiet humor, telling insight into character, and gentle affection. It's a masterpiece for Frank Finlay, a terrific little film.
