Don't Worry Darling (I) (2022)
6/10
Stunning visuals and interesting premise that fall flat.
14 January 2023
While this film explored interesting elements, I found myself wanting more depth and detail in certain areas. Definitely a visually compelling and stylish ride, but one that ultimately felt like a drive around the block instead of an actual intellectual or emotional adventure. Using the pressure of social conformity to build suspense seems tired. The commentary on patriarchal structure and women resisting this came across as heavy-handed and cumbersome. The ending was too abrupt and left much to be desired. Characters were flat, even when the creepy secret was revealed. At the end of the movie, I had so many questions but then ultimately realized I didn't care about the answers - which means ultimately the film fell short in at least two important ways. Watch this for the visual style more than anything, because the vague sense of suspense as well as the underdeveloped characters and storyline are not enough to be a satisfying watch.

Charmingly Dark Chaos!
11 November 2022
Thrillingly and darkly absurd, complexly funny at times, with creative bursts of violence and humorously crass vulgarity.

Stunning and stylish arthouse visual choices with the setting, retro decor, costuming, parodic symbolism, and cinematography - you can see the conscious care in creating each frame a certain way - without being overstated.

Cleverly written with quirky, oddly random dialogue.

A true roller coaster that had me laughing, cringing, yelling "OMG!" several times, and feeling utterly captivated to see what amazing ridiculousness would happen next.

Buckle up for an extra helping of charmingly chaotic energy!

Chef's Kiss! 😘👌🏻
1 April 2022
A hearty chef's kiss for this absolute gem of a film! 😘👌🏻

Horror, gore, intrigue, impressive story development, depth of emotion and meta-emotion, transportive performances, humor, cheeky soundtrack choices, visionary cinematography, arthouse editorial choices, bold use of ASMR and sound effects, endearing awkwardness, sublime balance of repulsion and fascination. So decadently done in all the best ways, riding the perfect edge of over the top and just right.

Beware: not for the faint of heart or queasy of stomach. 😉

Charming, dark, absurd - worth watching!
29 August 2021
Enjoyed this one! Arthouse vibes, dark, odd, adventurous, humorous in an absurd way, and surprisingly profound at times. Well poised balance of existential grittiness with an undercurrent of charm.
