The Witcher (2019)
Near unwatchable
The Witcher is really quite awful. The characters are badly cast (except Cahill) and the dialogue is pathetically cheesy. Even the costumes don't look right. You're constantly reminded that you're watching a TV show by all of the piss poor writing.
The bard character is particularly irritating and unlikeable. There's a lot of singing, and route one 'I'm the cooky character' jokes, delivered badly by a poorly cast actor who looks like he'd be more at home doing the Christmas nativity play at your local community centre.
The only upside is that there's some decent monsters and action scenes. If I were you I'd just fast forward to those and ignore the rest of the show.
Spitting Image (2020)
Absolute garbage
The Spitting Image revamp is unbelievably bad. It's completely toothless and totally unfunny. Seriously, I think this might be worst comedy series I've ever seen.
I promise you will be disappointed, especially if you liked the original series.
Sons of Anarchy (2008)
Not quite the ride of your life
I've just finished Sons of Anarchy and this is how I summarise every episode:
- An intense song at the beginning
- Men wearing leather hugging and saying they love each other
- Abruptly going into the intro sequence about 20 minutes into the episode
- Multiple, brutal murders and betrayals
- Bad news being delivered, followed by a deep sigh and 'Jesus Christ...'
- More hugging
- Katey Segal's character punching someone
- A soft female vocalist sings us out
Not to say this isn't worth a watch though, it's a fun series with plenty of satisfying shootouts, explosions and literally hundreds of murders. Some of the characters are somewhat two dimensional, but others are interesting to watch. Particularly Jax, whose internal struggle with 'going legitimate' and being a psychotic thug spirals him almost into madness.
His on screen mother, played by Katey Segal is a force to be reckoned with and brilliant to watch as she manipulates her way around her biker gang 'family.' Also, Tiggs, the necrophiliac nut job is a constant source of hilarity, and real dramatic presence throughout.
Sons of Anarchy does have a tendency to send your brain to sleep every now and then, but on the whole it was a worthy (and lengthy) expenditure of time.
This Way Up (2019)
Touching, moving comedy
I had to leave a review since I've read some in here that are frankly childish, witless, and overly critical. Perhaps female led comedy is too scary for some? Or maybe the subtly of the humour went over their heads.
It's interesting to see a protagonist whom we can laugh with, rather than at, as is the way with many sitcoms. She is a genuinely funny character who hides behind the tears of a clown when it comes to her hidden mental health problems. The struggles portrayed are very relatable, and they're set in a modern, inclusive world.
It's clear that Aisling Bea comes from a standup comedy background, as her million-words-a-minute ramblings take up most of the screen time. There are moments that are genuinely hilarious, but also very moving as well.
This is a great new addition to Channel 4's abundant collection of UK sitcoms. Hope to see more!
