Pig (2021)
Oh wow
I haven't been blown away by a movie in a long time. This did it. Acting was incredible (and I'm not a huge Nicolas Cage fan) and it was well-written. A running theme is honesty but not in a conventional way.
Das Boot (1981)
My favorite movie
I love submarine movies, and this is my favorite. While they mostly all follow a formula (submarine is damaged in an attack or dives to avoid an attack and goes too deep below design limits, people on the submarine work to get it fixed before it's too late, etc), and this one does follow that formula, it does it well and with interesting twists and turns and humanity. Being a U-boat, the expected outcome is destruction of the submarine by sinking. The actual outcome is different and somewhat unexpected when it happens, or it was for me. That outcome may have something to do with the controversy of a submarine full of Germans being nominally "the good guys." (That is, you're in the submarine with the often young or likable Germans, except maybe the Nazi code officer was a jerk, so that's who you root for, even though you know the country they were fighting for was doing evil things then.) It's long and typically subtitled (dubbed may exist, but unless you get really frustrated trying to read and follow the action, I'd go with subtitling). I think I own the Director's Cut, so shorter versions may be available. Music near the end is good.
A Christmas Princess (2019)
It was fun
Was it perfect? Naw. But for a Christmas romance it wasn't bad. The human interactions are mostly credible, like the prince being surprised to meet someone who's not a fan and doesn't care about his money. Maybe at first he likes the challenge, but as soon he realizes she's nearly perfect (yeah she is. Maybe that's a flaw in the story.) The young chef's parents are terrific and supportive. Maybe they could be more financially supportive (they say they can't help but seem to have a really nice place in the city), but losing everything you've worked for as your daughter's business goes bankrupt really wouldn't help anyone. Prince's dad is supportive. His mom needs working over.
Jewtopia (2012)
It could've been a 6, or maybe even a 7
Jewtopia had some really hilarious scenes, along with some uncomfortable ones. REALLY uncomfortable ones, like the guy (Christian) saying offensive things (without realizing they were offensive, mostly because he is kind of clueless on the social scale). The bigger, unredeemable problem, is that after he says the offensive things, he calls the woman (Alison) about 20 times, and she tells him to not call her anymore. So Christian gets his employee friends to help him stalk her parents, as part of the effort to win her back. BOY MEETS GIRL, GIRL REJECTS BOY, BOY STALKS HER FAMILY, BOY WINS HER BACK: BAD FORMULA. AND IT DIDN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN. He could've only called her a few times, realized he was being rejected, moved on to the manipulation (still a little slimy, but completely forgivable in this type of irreverent comedy). Even giving it further benefit of the doubt and saying an irreverent comedy CAN go that far, going that far is what took it from funny to uncomfortable, and therefore less funny.
