Purdah (2018)
A must-see!
This an exceptional documentary. Director Jeremy Guy uses a fly-on-the-wall approach that lets the world he's showcasing unfold effortlessly. Purdah does not judge its subjects but instead gives the audience a glimpse into a world that (at least for westerners) might be hard to understand. But the film is an honest and empathetic look at social and religious norms in India and how they affect a 20 year old girl and her dream of becoming a Cricket player. Full of heart and hope (and also heart-breaking) this is an amazing documentary. An absolute must-see.
We Got a Monkey's Paw (2018)
Love it!
So damn funny! And so damn good. Might be the best adaptation of the classic Monkey's Paw take ever!
Stadium Anthems (2018)
Nice satire about the current state of music industry
As both a music fan and someone who was in an indie band for nine years, I can somewhat relate to what Stadium Anthems is saying about the value current state of the music labels and music industry. But it's heart is in the right place and by the end of the film offers a bit of hope. Littered with humor, it's an entertaining voyage into the inter workings of a fictional music label and the artists they (kind of) represent. The cast are all good and the director does a nice job of keeping the viewers interested throughout. Bonus points for all the Star Wars references!
Invoking 5 (2018)
Saw the short Scratch at WIHFF
I saw the short horror film Scratch - which is included in this anthology and Scratch was awesome! A truly creepy, atmospheric slow-burn horror tale! Invoking 5 is worth the watch just to see this amazing short!
Between the Shades (2017)
Amazing Documentary!
Between the Shades is an incredible documentary showcasing a variety of those in the gay and lesbian community as they share their life stories and struggles. Filled with empathy (greatly needed in this country right now) and heart, this is a must see documentary for film lovers! Highly recommend!
Fuzz Track City (2012)
Fuzz Track City ROCKS!!!
Fuzz Track City is a really fun ride - both as a comedy and as an homage to 70's detective movies. Ad a bit of biting social commentary about the current state of the music industry (or lack there of) through the use of witty humor and you've got an extremely thrilling movie from first time director Steve Hicks. All the performances are excellent, from Dee Wallace (of "E.T." fame) to lead actor Todd Robert Anderson to the magnetic Josh Adell as the crazy/lovable agoraphobic Ziggy Schultz. Plus the music throughout the film is very catchy and expertly captures that old school rock n' roll vibe that the lead character loves so much. An all in all solid effort from the entire cast and crew. A must see!
