La casa de papel (2017)
Amateurs Plan the Heist of the Century
A bunch of undisciplined amateurs plan an 'Ocean's Eleven' style heist at The Spanish Mint. It all goes terribly awry because they ... well, behave like amateurs. It's well paced and makes for some good entertainment, but I'm not buying the underlying premise of this ragtag bunch somehow being capable of planning the heist of the century. It reminds me of the sci-fi movie Sunshine (2007) where a bunch of our 'finest' astronauts mess up their mission to save the earth.
Sunshine (2007)
Motley crew of amateurs try to reignite dying sun
A motley crew of unprofessional astronauts fight, cry and scream their way to reignite the sun, with a fission bomb of all things. You'd think this crew never had a serious training day in their life, the way the forget basic tasks, override alarms, argue and fight, and ignore the chain of command. Good thing we won't be needing this bunch to reignite our sun.

Masterpiece
This movie is a masterpiece, unlike anything else I've ever seen. I read Solomon Volkov's book probably 30 years ago, and as other reviewers have pointed out, the movie bears only a vague resemblance to the book. That being said, the movie holds its own firmly as a unique piece of art. Easy to watch and comprehend it is not; it certainly helps if you're familiar with Volkov's book and Shostakovich' music. If you, as I, love the music, you'll find Tony Palmer's stunning visual narrative steadily evolving along with Shostakovich' life and music. In something that's a very rare exercise for me, I plan to sit down and view this movie again very soon.
