Teen Vamp (1989)
Go Parkway Panthers!!!
17 October 2006
This horrible film was shot at my old High School. My older brother was going there at the time, but didn't try to be an extra -- the moron! I remember hearing all the excitement over the film as a kid. I also remember being aloud to watch it once it got on video ... which was great, since it showed boobies and I was like ... 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, by default, it might be the most important film ever made for people who grew up in South Bossier City!. So, hail to the red. Hail to the white. Hail alter mater, hail to her might. (Go Parkway) True faith full students. True faithful students. We praise thee to the sky, Loyal forever to Parkway High Gooooooooooooooo Panthers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Free Money (1998)
A Cult Classic in the Making
13 August 2006
If any film deserves to become a cult classic, this is one. It is very bizarre and, truly, unlike anything I've ever seen. It might be trying to rip off the Coen brothers' slapstick comedies, but it has its own strange tone unlike their films. It's like a living cartoon, basically. It feels even broader than even something like 'The Ladykillers' or 'Raising Arizona' - if that seems possible. The main point of watching it is Brando, who is unrecognizable with his hysterical swede accent. He even does slapstick ... using his enormous girth for comic effect. It is strangely enduring and, despite everything, likable! Overall, this is not for all tastes. But if you like iconic stars in very strange films, this is for you. It might deserve a rediscovery sometime soon. When the comments pages mainly only has two responses -- it's great or it's horrible -- you know something interesting is going on.

God bless Fuller.
24 May 2006
How fascinating an artist is Samuel Fuller? So fascinating that the responses on IMDb for this film range from "brilliant, devastating masterpiece" to "pulpy, campy fun" to "Ed Wood-like crap." Of course, being Fuller, this film is ALL those things. There are sequences that are amazing as anything. There are moments of just brilliant insight and meaning -- creepy and poignant in their nightmarish beauty. And then there are just plan crappy B movie moments that are unintentionally funny. Bad acting and annoying preachy moralizing. It's a hodgepodge. But it is also a totally unique experience to watch. Noir. Melodrama. Crap. Art. This is pure Fuller! Gotta love it!!!!! A must see for people who love their aesthetics with a kick.

La Dolce Vita (1960)
Still great!!!
14 May 2005
I LOVE Fellini and this film. When I think of my favorite American filmmakers of the last decade -- such as A. Payne, PT Anderson -- it always surprises me how much this one film seems a template for much of their work. I do like the French auteurs of the same period and find many of their films fascinatingly complex works. But they rarely produce the same emotional response that this film does in me. This just feels more honest -- less caught up in being "cool" and promoting it's self as "artistic." Something like 'Jules et Jim' just ages badly to me. 'La Doce Vita' feels so of our time, both in its style and plot-wise. Re-watching it this weekend, I was surprised how simple some of it came across. I always read about the complexity of structure, but there is still a bare bones character study at its core. The emotional core is brutal and honest, all the style and originality adds to that core as opposed to subtracts from it. That's what makes this film so damn timeless. With all the great style this film has, I never forget the shots of Mastroianni's face. (He gives one of the greatest performances ever put on film, by the way.) Requires multiple viewings. Also, it's fun to see the orgins of the word "paparzzi."
