From Time to Time (2009)
A great watch: A reflection on English life as it was.
In my humble opinion anything written by Julian Fellowes is superb.
Add to the mix England's greatest and most versatile actress Maggie Smith and the totally underrated Timothy Spall you've got a recipe for a great watch.
The story is for some perhaps from the yesteryear era, but it's a great look back on times gone by, with real struggles in real life, hoping yet not quite achieving !
Superb. 10/10.
After Life (2019)
An absolute must.
Simply brilliant.
Ricky Gervais has this genius about him, making a sad and sorrowful story into truly wonderful entertainment.
Bird Box (2018)
Too long, too boring. What is the 'Entity ?'
Seriously, is Sandra Bullock hard up for money ?
Why would a supposedly top actress ever get involved with rubbish like this ? Same thing goes for John Malkovich.
The rest of the cast I can understand as work is work and a paycheck keeps the wolves from the door.
Unless you've got absolutely nothing better to do for 2 hours and 4 minutes, do yourself a favour... Give it a miss.
Kursk (2018)
Good movie. If they were to redo the beginning and end, i would be an excellent movie.
I don't know who was responsible for deciding to film the opening 15 minutes and the remaining 7 minutes in matchbox sized 2:1 ratio film stock but he should be kept away from movie making in the future as I was sorely tempted to switch off after the first 10 minutes and that would have been a real shame !
What was his premise ? To show that Soviet Russian sailors whilst on shore leave lived in poverty ? Surely this was made clear by the crew having to pawn their watches to pay for a colleagues wedding party after not receiving their salaries, or was it something slightly subtler that I missed ? Whatever it was it was misguided and failed miserably.
Having said that, I thought the remainder of the film was both suspenseful and strangely melancholic, also having read about the incident when it actually occurred, historically factual.
The abject failure of the Soviet Government, Vladimir Putin and the Navy during this crisis is still as shocking today as it was then and serves as a reminder of how little value, even for their own sons, life means to the Kremlin Hierarchy.
As for the cast; a mention to Matthias Schoenaerts the Russian submariner Mikhail, a powerful and heart rendering performance. Also to Colin Firth, the British commodore David Russell, both played truly believable roles.
On a side note, I appreciate Max von Sydow is 90 and was equally believable as Admiral Petrenko, but he really does look like a fossil these days and should consider putting away the grease paint.
All in all well worth a watch.
Green Book (2018)
Easy to see why this won Best Picture
Simply the best film of the year.
Even if you don't watch any other movies for the next 12 months you can't miss this one.
Truly great.
I See You (2019)
Give this a Big Miss.
I'm sorry but how and why is such garbage like this even considered movie material ?
As previously mentioned by other reviews, the shaking hand held camera literally gives you a headache, and the 'authentic' audio is not only bloody annoying it's totally unnecessary.
Story line... Non existent.
I managed 19 minutes before I started to drink whisky.
How other reviewers give this anything over 2 stars is not only nonsense, it's totally fake.
Do yourself a favour, start drinking your whisky before you switch this rubbish on, that way hopefully, you're gonna fall asleep before 19 minutes.
The Favourite (2018)
Irritating music.
As has been previously stated many times, the three leading ladies put in a tremendous performance but period dramas are not really my cup of tea.
My gripe is the soundtrack, the incessant one stroke on the violin followed by a plucked string that goes on for much of the movie is Bloody Annoying and totally unnecessary. Why the director / musical director found it important i´ll never know.
Hanna (2019)
Dumb and will only get dumber.
After just one episode i´ve had enough.
The father takes his newborn daughter to live in the deep forest after the murder of her mother, fine no problem but why would he possibly be concerned about Hanna being recognised what, 15, 16 years later ?
I've got kids and believe me the difference between a newborn and a teenager is such they'd be unrecognisable.
Stupid and unbelievable story line.
On a secondary note, if the father´s also never left the sanctuary of the forest in all this time, where did he get the axe, cutlery, coffee pot etc. from ? Perhaps he built a secret forge behind the cave they live in !!!
Stupid. Dumb and will only get dumber.
True Detective: The Hour and the Day (2019)
Slow... think i´d rather watch paint dry !
How i´ve made it to episode 4 goes to show how desperate I was for this over hyped rubbish to get better but alas no, it just trundles along at such a dithering, withering pace, chopping and changing from one decade to another with no cohesion and terrible script and storyline that it's completely worn out my patience.
How the hell anyone can sit through 9 or is it 10 episodes is beyond me. It could and should have been done and dusted by now, (ep 4).
Sorry to dissolution anyone but the whole of series 3, same as series 2, absolutely sucks.
Mr Inbetween (2018)
Great watch.
I'm the first to admit i´ve not watched too many Australian series before but hey, if this is anything to go by, i´ll definitely be seeking out more. A great watch and in only half hour episodes it's terrific. I truly hope they come back with a second season.
Maniac (2018)
I must be missing something !
I´m really bewildered by the absolute rubbish spewed out these days that´s actually supposed to pass as entertainment...
I sat through one and a half episodes of this tripe and am amazed at some of the reviews posted here that actually claim this was enjoyable !!!
I really must be missing something, either that or I need to be on medication, probably LSD or whatever passes for this halosenagetic these days.
In all seriousness, don´t waste your valuable time even contemplating this, stick pins in your eyes instead, i will be more enjoyable...
The Krays: Dead Man Walking (2018)
Don´t waste your time !!!
Wow, that's an hour and nineteen minutes i´ll never get back !!!
Why oh why these so called filmmakers still keep "flogging the dead horse" is utterly beyond me.
The subject of the Krays has been made and remade, and by the way, by a lot more talented actors than this bunch of over the hill nobody´s, until it gets boring, which is what this movie most definitely is.
The only half decent two minutes of this whole debacle was a cameo by the still lovely, a sixty, Linda Lusardi, and that´s the only reason I gave it one star.
Condor (2018)
Terrible writing...
Up until episodes 9 & 10 this was a watchable series, unfortunately at the end of ep.9, when the two FBI wannabes stop a complete stranger in the street and commandeer his car, it miraculously has a tracker inbuilt that takes them to the exact location the assassin is...
Then in ep.10, John "triple summersaults" his car with him and the assassin on board, straight off of an overpass landing smack on its roof, yet both walk away without so much as a scratch...
This was going to be an 8/10 but now barely a 6.
Unforgotten (2015)
Nic Walker ???
Great series, terrific storyline just one downer for me and that is Nicola Walker´s pedestrian, not quite believable performance as a DCI.
