Entourage (2004–2011)
Expository writing and lack of vision.

This is a good example of overwritten character-play and ill-humored plots. It's trying to be smart and funny but unfortunately there's a lack of sensibility and foresight into the lives and subject matters at hand. This show absolutely suffers from a voice - it caters to ignorance and crassness. I cried every moment I was being fed too much information as each new character was being introduced. Our CLAN shows up at Sundance and as they're moving through the airport, no one (writer / director) has the courage to sustain any mystery or complexity amongst the characters. Everyone's talking, all the time! The audience doesn't have a chance to breath and or imagine what might be on the minds of these characters. Usually when I get off a plane, the last thing I want to do is talk none-stop. Instead they're all speaking the Hollywood vernacular that we all find so extremely illiterate and trashy at times. Why can't they show a Hollywood that hasn't been displayed before? An intelligent, sensitive, complex Hollywod perhaps? There is so much beauty and pain in life, why can't this show, or many shows mirror life and love, humor and sexuality without losing it's artistic merit?

A soft sale for humor but not without its obscurities.

A friend of mind showed me a DVD copy of this and I was actually quite impressed by the writing and directing. At first I thought I was watching a drama, then suddenly I was led into an obscure, urban reality that evoked a sense of curiosity. I especially loved that the characters played a stereotype - then suddenly were turned inside out. It's an organic approach to an often ill-used genre (mockumentary) which I found to be a very delightful movie. There are many paradoxical moments / characters, with nice elements of humanity sprinkled throughout. A refreshing take on cop movies. It seems Reno 911 could learn a few things from this director, if they haven't already.
