Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
Won't hit you enough if you weren't part of the 80's uni life
It is inevitable to compare this movie with Dazed and Confused. Even on the trailer is presented as a "continuation".
Everything that was well captured on Dazed and Confused gets it wrong on this movie.
Even if placed on the US 70s, Dazed was an atemporal and universal representation of adolescence. You could identify with most of the movie situations and characters feelings no matter where or when you grew up. And it accomplishes this by really expressing the inner thoughts and concerns of the protagonists.
Everyone wants some does the opposite. Most of the characters seems to be just brainless, and the smart ones are just too plain. While it is true most teenagers may look like this from the outside, they have their own world going on inside them too, as you had when you were a teen.
So if this word is not externalized anyhow you will only feel connected to the movie if you were teenage in the 80s in a US fraternity campus.
BSO is great, pace is correct and has "feel good movie" vibes.
6'5/10.
Saltburn (2023)
Good Cinematography, not so good scripting
The movie can be splitted in three parts:
1) Oxford: the introduction
2)Saltburn: where it builds up
3)The killings: twist and conclusion.
Well, the first part is not really building much for the story, just presenting half of the characters. So without knowing where the movie was going all along this part, it felt maybe too long for an introduction.
Second half it's where it gets interesting, and during all its duration it's giving you hints of some kind of conspiracy between the familly towards Oliver.
Now it's were I find the major problem, all those hints are threw away to hit you with the twist.
But first, I really wanted to know what all those hints were about. Mostly by Venettia interactions: "I like you more than the last year one" , "I see now why he likes you...(suspense pause)...you are real" ; The interest of the familly on the details of Oliver's background, the satanic figures at the party... All seemed to be pointing to some sort of witchcraft ritual, a weird familly tradition or something similar... And if all of this was just to say that Alex brings a new friend every year it feels a really empty explanation for the tension build.
And then the third part. The twist seems just really lazy scripting. It's presented as if everything was meticulously planned and Oliver is a genious. But every and each of the steps were extremely subject to random factors that really felt improvised.
I think it would have been way more credible and satisfactory if the acts were presented as acted on the go insted of all planned.
On the positive side, the visuals and the acting are great. Soundtrack it's good too. Each shot it's a painting, so it can be enjoyed just by the visual pleasure.
Would have been a 6 of it weren't by the cinematography, and an 8 if the story and the rythm were more thoughtful.
So I rate it 7/10.
The Green Knight (2021)
You need to know what you are going to see.
Before watching the movie you need to know this is not a medieval action story, it´s a fable, a fantasy tale.
Being on the fantasy genre plus being highly metaphorical and charged with symbolism you may find most of what´s happening doesn´t make any sense. Even after reading the meaning of all the symbolisms you may can´t still make sense of all of it.
And it was on purpose. The director wants to leave most of it for you own interpretation.
What you will find it´s a stunning visual movie with a really immersive score and sounds. For me it was like a mix of Ari Aster (Hereditary) visuals and Robert Eggers (The Witch) Storytelling.
If this is what you are expecting to see and you like this kind of movies, you will most probably enjoy it.
If you are expecting something closer to The King (2019) you may be disappointed.
8/10.
Wonka (2023)
It's an ok movie
The movie was funny and enjoyable.
Timothee Chalamet and Hugh Grant performances were great, their characters charming and memorable. But that's it.
It's a pitty as the movie had all the ingredients to be an above average movie. But the story is dull, the other characters aside wonka and the Oompa loompa are really plain. And neither of the songs or the scenes are near to memorable. (Excluding the songs from the original movie)
Compared to the two previous adaptations where I can still sing some of the songs from the top of my mind and remember the scenes and most of the characters, I can't remember any of the original songs of this movie just after whatching it, and I'm sure I will be forgetting the rest...
I'm aware this is due to having high expectations, so without any context, the movie is a good one.
7/10.
A Hidden Life (2019)
Stunning Visuals lacking a bit of continuity.
This is a slow paced reflexive movie. While in general I like slow burned movies, I have some difficulties in engaging with Terrence Mallick ones.
The plot is highly interesting and creates a lot of conflicts and emotions but it gets a bit diluted when the focus seems to be on the visuals. The different perspective of the characters on the topic discussed was well reflected but felt like were independent thoughts due to the in-between long scenes of landscapes and mundane situations, while beautiful, made the movie not feel fully connected and so engaging.
The cinematography is stunning as always on Mallick films. But I missed some memorable sound track too, like in The Thin Red line for example.
I rate it 7/10.
The Killer (2023)
Interesting But....
Interesting movie, the plot while simple it´s engaging.
The visuals are great looking.
I personally enjoyed the story telling style. It reminded me of Chuck Palahniuk style (no surprise Fincher directed the adaptation of Palahniuk book Fight Club). Which interlaces the main story with idea divagation and constant thoughts on diverse and non always related topics.
Said all of that, the movie feels like it lacks something. To me it was not able to deliver any emotion, making the main character appear ruthless and unfeeling, somehow made the movie appear the same way, which I really think it was not what it was meant for, specially considering how it develops later on.
My rating is 7/10.
Past Lives (2023)
Captivating
Really captivating story and really well paced.
The acting is good and the chemistry between the main actors is noticeable which makes the story more compelling.
The movie is really successful in transmitting the feelings of the main character regarding the full situation, especially at the end, but without forgetting to transmit the feelings of the other characters involved too, which makes it a very touching movie.
If you liked the Before trilogy you will like this one.
Being an A24 movie and having both New York and Seul a strong impact on the story I missed some more memorable visuals. Meanwhile watching the movie I was thinking if it had similar visuals as "Lost in translation" for example in my opinion it would have significantly upgraded the movie .
7,5/10.
Bones and All (2022)
A study of loneliness and connections
Bones and All.
I really enjoyed this movie, the cinematography and direction was superb. The visuals were beautiful and keept me stick to the screen..
About the plot I feel this movie is not about canibalism, you could replace it for any other addiction/fetish/outsider behavior and it would still work.
What I consider the main topic (and this is my personal opinion) is about the loneliness, the happiness when you feel someone you are somehow connected with and even the desperation to find that connection.
And having this in mind I think the movie really delivers.
I rate the movie 7'5/10..
