Considered edgy for its time, it doesn't really hold water. It feels like it was made in 1965 but it was actually made in 1975. Its futuristic feel is really antiquated and cliché'. The repainted football helmets, shoulder pads and baseball catchers leg guards were a cheap cop out. The skates look like rentals from the roller rink.
As far as overall story, it's symbolism was strong and had truth but it gets under-minded with a poor package of cheesiness and predictable plot line. The action scenes were poor and felt contrived. Some of the game sequences were insultingly weak.
The acting was one dimensional with almost every character. Houseman was good and so was Gunn but again cliché'. Caan was never a great actor but in this role he is blah at best. His character arc is so overdone and predictable. Certain places were dying of dialog, others there was too much. Maud Adams was beautiful and the camera loves her but she is only passable as an actress.
The good symbolism get lost in the mix of mediocre characters, lame action, child-like plot and pathetic sets, props and wardrobe. And what's the symbolism in a blurry freeze of Caan at the end and then zooming in on it TWICE! With horror organ music underscoring the blur-face. C'Mon. It's almost comical to watch now. From the crappy love montage on down a flawed predictable film.
